This is the story about Setyo, Siti and Ludiro, who were the performer of Javanese Ramayana's Wayang Wong. Setyo and Siti are spouse who live in a village by selling earthenware products. In the village, live as well Ludiro, the head of the stockyard, who is very wealthy and secretly in love with Siti. Conflicts arrived as Setyo's earthenware company is going bankrupt and Siti started to took notice in Ludiro's desire to win her love. These triangle love transform into a civil war in the village that brings not only extremity and injustice, but also the death of the loved ones.

The rest of the movie follows two streams of events on the bus and on the truck, getting us to know and like a wide variety of characters, wondering which ones will end up being casualties and holding breath for our favourites. 51년간의 일본 통치에서 해방된 1945년부터 장개석의 국민당이 타이뻬이에 임시정부를 수립한 1949년까지 4년 동안을 임가네 4형제를 중심으로 다루었다. 1945년 일본이 패망하자 해방된 대만. 식당을 경영하는 임아록에게는 장사를 하는 문웅(잭카오), 일본 군의관으로 출정해 행방불명된 문상, 불량배가 된 문량, 청각장애를 가진 문청(양조위). 네 아들이 있다. 문청은 사진관을 경영하면서 지식인 청년 오관영과 함께 살고 있다. 관영과 그 친구들은 부패한 나라를 걱정하며 개혁운동을 고민하고 있다. 문청은 관영의 누이 관미와 사랑하는 사이가 된다. 그 사이 문량과 문웅은 상해에 본거지를 둔 범죄 조직의 유혹으로 배를 제공하고 밀수에 손을 댄다. 그러나 상해조직은 문량이 일본에 징용돼서 일했던 것을 빌미로 문량과 문웅을 전범으로 당국에 고발하고, 이권을 빼앗아 버린다. 문량은 곧 석방되지만, 폐인이 된다. 한편 2.28사건이 터지자 문청의 친구들은 체포되거나 실종되고, 문청도 옥살이를 한다. 옥에서 나온 문청은 관영의 정부 대항조직에 참여하려 하나 관영은 그에게 관미를 부탁한다. 이즈음 제일 큰형 문웅이 상해 조직과의 혈전에서 죽자 임씨 집안의 아들은 문청만 남게 된다. 결국 문청은 관미와 결혼식을 올리고 세월이 흘러 아들까지 낳는다. 그러나 문청도 역시 체포된다.

'배스커빌가의 사냥개'는 셜록 홈즈의 원작 자체도 추리에 크게 신경을 덜 쓴 느낌의 작품입니다. 셜록 홈즈가 보통 왓슨에게 일부 단서만 알려주다가 범인을 늦게 밝히는데 이 원작에서는 비교적 빨리 범인을 왓슨에게 바로 밝힙니다. 범인이 누구냐가 중요한 내용이 아니라 전설속의 마견의 정체에 더 관심을 쏠리게 하는 내용이니까요. 해머 영화사의 이 작품에서 사실 마견의 활용을 꽤 기대했는데 마견의 등장분량은 굉장히 짧습니다. 그래도 39년 영화와는 달리 헨리 경을 덮쳐서 목을 물어뜯을 뻔한 장면을 만들기는 하죠. 그런데 실루엣으로라도 좀 보여주고 그랬더라면 좀 더 음산한 느낌을 주었을텐데 그렇지도 않습니다. 그냥 끝에 잠깐 등장하고 있지요.
