When Zani, the rape victim's brother, returns from Swaziland where he won a place in school, he is determined to change everything. In the small hours, in the waiting room at Johannesburg station, he runs into Prof. Zamani, who's spent the night on the town. They travel back together to the harsh reality of the township. 별 볼일 없는 프리랜서 사진작가 세르베(파비오 테스티 분)은 영화계의 스타를 꿈꾸지만 싸구려 에로영화에 출연하며 돈을 버는 불운한 여배우 나딘 슈발리에(로미 슈나이더 분)을 보고는 사랑에 빠져든다. 그녀의 애정을 얻고 싶었던 세르베는 나딘에게 여주인공의 역을 주기 위해 연극 "리처드 3세"를 제작하기로 하고 암흑가의 고리대금업자에게 돈을 빌린다. 처음에는 그에게 차가운 반응을 보이던 나딘은 세르베의 적극적인 노력에 점차 마음을 열어가고, 결국 나딘은 남편인 작크(작크 뒤트롱 분)과 세르베 사이에서 갈등하고 있는 자신의 모습을 발견하게 된다.

2년 전에 파리로 옮겨온 미국인 수학자 필립 알라르는 출판사에서 일하면서 아내 질, 딸 카티, 아들 파트릭과 단란하게 살아간다. 질은 아들 파트릭과 세느 강변으로 나가 산책하면서 그림 그리는 것을 취미로 삼은 질은 툭하면 시간 개념도 없이 늦 게 귀가해 필립에게 핀잔을 듣는다. 그래서 자주 8살 난 착한 딸 카티가 저녁을 차린다. 파리로 온 후부터 질은 자주 물건을 잃어버리거나 똑같은 옷을 사는 등 약한 기억상실증에 시달리다 정신과 의사의 치료를 받는다. 필립은 산업스파이 조직의 제의를 거절했다는 이유로 협박을 받게 되고, 질은 가벼운 교통사고를 당한다. 어느날 질은 아이들과 함께 서커스를 보러갔다가 길에서 아이들을 잃어버린다. 경찰은 질의 기억력을 의심하고, 질이 아이들과 동반 자살극 을 꾸미려했다고 오인, 유치장에 가둔다. 유치장에서 곰곰히 생각하던 질은 언젠가 애를 봐주러왔던 직업소개소 여직원 한센이 근처에 왔더라는 카티의 말을 상기하고 경찰과 함께 확인한다. 그리고 집으로 돌아온 질은 남편과 옆집 친구 신시아의 얘기를 우연히 듣게 되고, 남편의 애정을 확인하게 되지만, 그동안 친절을 가장한 채 자신을 서서히 정신병자로 몰고간 사람이 바로 신시아였음을 확신하게 된다. 신시 아는 모든 사실을 고백하고 그동안 애정을 느끼게 된 아이들을 함께 구하러 갔다가, 스파이조직에 의해 죽음을 당한다. 필립과 질은 무사히 아이들을 되찾고, 다시 행복한 미래를 꿈꾼다.
