동화 『오즈의 마법사』를 과감하게 각색한 뮤지컬 영화. 거장 시드니 루멧이 연출하고 퀸시 존스가 음악감독을 맡아 원작의 동화적 풍경을 빌딩숲, 지하철, 공장 등 대도시의 인공적이고 삭막한 풍경으로 바꾸어놓았다. 또한 허수아비로 분장한 스무 살의 마이클 잭슨이 춤을 추고 노래를 하는 모습을 볼 수 있는 것 역시 에서 놓칠 수 없는 부분.
