He imagined himself to be Lord Byron, a bigamist, and a prize-fighter; but the poems of his madness are perhaps the most remarkable he ever wrote. 1920년대의 잉글랜드. 자유로운 영혼의 소유자인 예술가 구드런(글렌다 잭슨)과 학교 선생인 우술라(제니 린든)은 자매 지간이다. 서로 무척 통하는 구석이 많은 이 자매는 형제 지간인 두 남자, 제랄드(올리버 리드)와 루퍼트(알란 베이츠)랑 오랜 세월 동안 알고 지내다가 근래에 들어서 루퍼트는 우술라와, 제랄드는 구드런과 각자 짝을 이루어 연인 사이로 발전했다. 처음엔 그저 사랑의 감정에 푹빠져 행복하기만 했던 네 사람은 피크닉을 갔다가 실수로 호수에 빠져 죽을 고비를 넘기는 바람에 다투기도 하고, 제랄드와 루퍼트는 누드 레슬링 대회에 참가해서 자매들로 부터 비난도 받는다. 또한 두 커플은 현저하게 다른 방향으로 관계의 발전을 가져 오는데 루퍼트와 우술라는 서로에 대해 점점 많이 알아 가면서 사랑이 더욱 깊어지고 누구보다도 친밀한 관계로 이어지지만, 내성적인 제랄드는 적극적이고 도전적인 구드런과 왠지 모를 거리감이 생기고 만다. 그러나 두 연인들은 곧 모두 결혼하게 된다. 스위스로 함께 신혼 여행을 떠난 두 커플. 그곳에서 구드런은 제랄드와 교감하지 못함에 대한 반작용으로 조각가인 로에르크(블라덱 세이발)와 불륜에 빠지고, 이 사실을 알게 된 제랄드는 눈으로 뒤덮인 숲을 헤매다가 숨지고 만다. 제랄드의 죽음으로 충격을 받은 루퍼트는 행복해야 할 신혼 여행이 불륜과 비극적인 죽음으로 얼룩져 버리자 여성과 남성이 완전한 관계를 맺을수 있을지 의심스럽다고 외치며 절규한다.
