전쟁 중에 가톨릭 여자 학교에서 크리스마스 케이크를 둘러싸고 벌어지는 순수, 욕심, 환상이 가득한 이야기. "pupil"은 라틴어 "pupilla", 즉 여자아이라는 뜻에서 파생됐다. 이 이야기는 20세기의 가장 유명한 작가였던 엘사 모란테가 1971년 크리스마스를 맞아 친구 고프레도 포피에게 쓴 편지에서 영감을 받았다.

다섯 자매의 이야기다. 어린 시절 물놀이를 간 자매들은 자신들의 삶을 뒤흔드는 비극적인 사건과 마주하는데, 영화의 시간은 그로부터 몇 십년 뒤 이들이 중년이 되는 시기로 갑작스레 이동한다. 그날 이후 응어리진 마음과 오해로 인해 서로를 오랫동안 원망하던 이들은 자매들이 모두 노년이 된 어느 날, 누군가의 부고 소식을 듣고 한 자리에 모인다.

이탈리아 로마 근교 소도시의 여름. 아이들은 마당 풀장에서 물놀이에 여념이 없고 어른들은 함께 저녁식사를 하는 평범한 여름날의 광경이다. 하지만 정체를 알 수 없는 누군가의 목소리와 카메라의 시선은 그 안에 숨겨진 온갖 나쁜 것들(!)을 드러내기 시작한다. 이웃의 아내를 탐하는 아저씨의 시선, 아버지의 스마트폰 속 음란물을 열심히 연구하는 아들, 임신한 청소녀와 그녀에게 사로잡힌 꼬마.

매년 생일이 되면 세상에 없는 엄마로부터 선물이 도착한다. 임신한 채 시한부 선고를 받은 엄마가 미리 준비해둔 열여덟 개의 선물. 하지만 딸에겐 그 선물이 부담이다. 마침내 마지막 선물을 푸는 날, 모녀에게 새로운 시작이 찾아온다.

시간이 멈춘 것 같은 아름다운 시골 마을 인비올라타. 라짜로는 이웃들과 함께 마을의 지주인 후작 부인의 담배 농장에서 일하는 순박한 청년이다. 요양을 위해 마을을 찾아온 후작 부인의 아들 탄크레디와 라짜로는 둘만의 우정을 쌓는다. 자유를 갈망하는 탄크레디는 자신의 납치극을 꾸며 마을을 벗어나려고 결심하고, 라짜로는 그런 그를 돕는다. 한편, 납치 신고로 마을을 찾아온 경찰에 의해 이웃들은 뿔뿔이 흩어지게 되고 라짜로는 홀로 남게 되는데...

Depressed Jewish shrink Elia one day meets Claudia, a young and eccentric personal trainer.

It's 1348. The plague has brutally hit Florence. A group of then young people, seven women and three men, rebel against the feeling of death that is about to swallow them. They flee the city and find refuge in an abandoned villa in the Tuscan hills. Here, between moral doubts and the tasks needed to survive, they kill time by telling each other stories until they will decide to return. The stories are varied - tragic, bizarre, funny or erotic - but common and central to all of them is the female presence.
