Orvar is a vagabond, walking the country roads and living on sunshine and generosity. One day he decides to find work somewhere to get some money. He becomes a helping hand for seven lumberjack brothers. The big and strong brothers really enjoy themselves, joking with the small and meek Orvar. Orvar does not know that he has inherited a large fortune but the seven brothers do and they begin to treat him with the greatest courtesy. They convince him to write his last will, making them his heirs, and then begin to make plans on how to kill him.

위드그렌은 자상한 어머니와 다소 엄격하지만 자식들에 대해 깊은 정을 가진 아버지의 사랑을 받으며 자라는 평범한 학생이다. 평소 학생들에게 외면을 당하는 라틴어 선생으로부터 수업 준비 부족으로 크게 야단을 맞던 날 저녁, 거리를 방황하다 위드그렌은 술에 만취한 여인 버사를 집으로 데려다주게 되고 그 후 버사와 관계를 갖게 된다. 부모에 대한 죄책감과 공부에 지장이 생기자 위드그렌은 버사를 떠나려고 하지만 버사는 누군가가 자신을 괴롭힌다며 두려움에 떨며 위드그렌을 잡는다. 서로 의지하고 위로하는 둘의 관계가 계속되는 가운데 위드그렌은 학교에서 라틴어 선생 때문에 계속 고전을 면치 못한다. 그러던 어느 날 버사의 아파트를 찾은 위드그렌은 버사가 죽은 채 누워 있는 걸 발견하고 또 반은 정신이 나간 채 숨어 있던 라틴어 선생도 발견한다. 공포에 질려 위드그렌이 뛰쳐나가자 라틴어 선생은 스스로 경찰에 전화를 해, 자신이 버사의 죽음과 관련이 없음을 주장하며 오히려 위드그렌을 고소한다. 실의에 빠진 위드그렌은 학교와 집을 뛰쳐나와 버사의 아파트에서 두문불출하며 지낸다. 하지만 위드그렌은 교장 선생님의 방문을 받은 다음 버사의 아파트에서 나와 성숙해진 모습으로 세상을 향해 걸어간다.
