샌프란시스코의 부유한 상속녀이자 성공한 극작가인 마이라 허드슨(Myra Hudson: 조안 크로포드 분)은 뉴욕에서 공 연할 연극의 배우를 캐스팅하다 레스터 블레인(Lester Blaine: 잭 팔란스 분)을 만나게 된다. 기차에서 우연히 다시 만난 그들은 급격히 가까워지면서 결혼에까지 이르게 된다. 그러나 레스터에게는 이미 아이린(Irene Neves: 글로리아 그라함 분)이라는 정부가 있었다. 처음부터 레스터는 마이라의 돈을 보고 결혼한 것. 그러나 마이라가 작성한 유언장에는 자신이 죽은 뒤 레스터가 만약 재혼을 하게 되면 유산으로 만불 만 상속받을 수 있도록 되어있었고, 아직 유언장이 효력을 발생하지 않는다는 사실을 안 두 사람은 마이라를 죽이기로 계획한다.
