When Nick Davis leaves prison after one year in solitaire, he is hired to operate forklift in a warehouse in the harbor owned by the Japanese Yakuza patriarch Isshin Tendo. 화물트럭 운전사인 '덕'은 트럭 기사들의 속도 위반을 함정 단속해서 돈을 뜯어내는 악덕 보안관 '더티 라일'과는 원수지간이다. 폭발 위험성이 있는 화학 물질을 운반 중이던 덕과 다른 운전기사들은 술집에서 시비를 거는 라일과 그 부하 경찰들을 때려 눕힌 후, 도주 길에 오른다. 덕은 과거 도로 상에서 알게 된 여성 사진사인 멜리사를 태우고 일행의 선두에 나서게 되고, 라일은 그를 필사적으로 추적하지만 다른 트럭 기사들까지 덕에게 가세하면서, 트럭 행렬은 더욱 거대해진다. 덕과 그 일행이 주민들의 지지까지 받게 되자 이를 자신의 정치적 목적에 이용하고자 하는 뉴멕시코의 주지사 '해스킨스'는 공식적인 자리를 마련해 일행을 만난다. 한편 라일은 동료 보안관인 알바레즈와 함께 덕의 동료인 '스파이더 마이크'를 미끼로 잡아서 폭행을 가하고, 이를 본 한 청소부가 덕에게 이 사실을 알린다. 홀로 마이크를 구하러 가겠다고 나선 덕은 뒤따라온 동료들의 도움으로 마이크를 구출해내는 데 성공하지만, 자신 때문에 괜한 고생을 한 동료에게 미안해한다. 복수의 칼을 갈던 라일은 멕시코로 향하는 길목에 군까지 배치시켜 다리를 건너는 덕의 트럭을 향해 무차별 사격을 가하고, 덕의 트럭은 폭파하고 만다. 모두가 덕이 죽었다고 생각한다. 추모식장에서도 자신의 정치적 야심을 드러내는 주지사를 역겨워하는 트럭 운전사들은 자리를 뜨고, 멜리사도 떠나려는 순간, 죽은 줄 알고 있었던 덕이 차의 뒷자리를 차지하고 있지 않은가. 덕이 멜리사와 함께 있는 걸 본 라일은 경악하지만, 곧 크게 웃고 만다.

This day-in-the-life cult comedy focuses on a group of friends working at Sully Boyar's Car Wash in the Los Angeles ghetto. The team meets dozens of eccentric customers -- including a smooth-talking preacher, a wacky cab driver and an ex-convict -- while cracking politically incorrect jokes to a constant soundtrack of disco and funk. Some of the workers find romance as the day moves along, but most are just happy to get through another shift.
