1995년 세르비아군에 쫓기던 보스니아인들이 UN 캠프로 피신을 한다. UN군 통역관 아이다는 남편과 아들이 캠프 안으로 들어오지 못한 상태임을 알게 된다. 그들을 살리기 위해 동분서주한 끝에 무사히 캠프로 들어오지만 진짜 문제가 벌어진다. UN군은 보스니아인을 해치지 않겠다는 약속을 믿고 세르비아군을 캠프로 진입시킨다. 세르비아군은 약속과 달리 보스니아 남자들을 따로 분류해서 어딘가로 끌고간다. 아이다는 남편과 아들을 살리기 위해 다시한번 안간힘을 쓴다. 발칸반도에서 벌어진 인종학살은 상상조차 힘든 일이지만 실제 있었던 사건이고 그런 만큼 사건의 진상을 파악하는 것은 중요하다.

어느 날 앨리스는 아름다운데다 테라피 효능까지 있는 식물을 고안해낸다. 회사의 통제에도 불구하고 앨리스는 이 진홍색 꽃을 피우는 이종 식물을 아들 조에게 선물한다, 아들은 식물에게 ‘리틀 조’ 라는 별명을 지어주고 극진히 돌보는데…

이란 출신으로 독일에서 활동하는 알리 수잔데가 각본을 쓰고 연출한 애니메이션으로, 테헤란의 밤을 배경으로 상처 입은 어른의 이야기가 펼쳐진다. 영화는 엄격한 종교적 도덕률과 사회적 규범의 베일을 걷으면 드러나는 어둠의 세계를 그린다. 캐릭터들은 실사로 촬영된 연기자의 움직임을 한장 한장 선을 주워 그리는 기법으로 표현되어, 이란영화에서 좀처럼 볼 수 없는 충격적인 장면을 담는다. 마약중독자 남편과 이혼을 준비하고 청각 장애아 아들을 데리고 다니며 일하는 성매매 여성, 남편의 허락없이 취업하려는 임산부, 지하클럽에서 일하는 음악가와 원나잇을 하는 결혼식을 앞둔 젊은 여성 등은 각자의 사연으로 서로 만나고 얽힌다. 사회적으로 엄격한 이란에서 여성은 어떤 모습으로든 희생자가 됨을 고발한다. 금기에 맞서 도전하는 개인의 슬픈 서사가 화려한 색감과 모던한 사운드로 이뤄진 스타일 위로 반짝거린다.
