Pvt. Smith, an American soldier stationed in a German town during the occupation of Germany after World War I, falls in love with the daughter of the town's leading citizen. The problem is that his sworn enemy, Sgt. Butts, also has designs on the girl. Butts comes up with a plan to get rid of his competition and get the girl for himself, but things don't go quite the way he planned.

The story concerns the misadventures of sailor Steve Doren, who tries his best to support his wife Mary on his piddling income. But like seafaring men everywhere, Steve is constitutionally unreliable, especially when hip-swinging temptress Cassie Lang sashays into view.

Geoffrey is desperately in love with Mavis, who lives at his boardinghouse and is also pursuing a writing career. Unable to marry her because of his poverty, in his anger he curses God for abandoning him. Soon Geoffrey meets Prince Lucio de Rimanez, a wealthy, urbane gentleman who informs Geoffrey that he has inherited a fortune, but that he must place himself in the Prince's hands in order to enjoy the fruits of his inheritance. What Geoffrey doesn't know is that Prince Lucio is actually Satan.

〈버라이어티〉는 하층 계급 인물의 개인적인 심리를 주로 다루고 있는 ‘실내극영화’와 남자 주인공이 도시의 유혹에 빠져 가정으로부터 멀어지는 모습을 그린 ‘거리영화’의 특징을 모두 지니고 있다. 널리 알려진 무르나우의 〈마지막 웃음〉(1924)에 비해 덜 알려져 있지만, 삼각관계를 이루는 공중곡예사들의 멜로드라마라는 특이한 소재를 다루었으며, 20년대 독일영화에서 가장 뛰어난 기술적∙미학적 성취를 이룬 영화라고 할 수 있다. 칼 프로인트의 카메라는 인물의 사랑, 질투와 같은 심리를 파고들기 위해 자유로운 움직임과 다양한 앵글을 구사하고, 주관적인 시점과 결합된 움직임은 시.공간적 제약을 뛰어넘어 다양한 영화적 시각을 제공함으로써 현실적인 이야기에 스며든 내면을 시각화한다. 공중곡예 장면은 그 자체로 스펙터클을 경험하게 하는 역동적인 힘이 있으며, 뒤퐁의 섬세한 감정 연출과 정교한 편집도 뛰어난 경지를 보여준다. 이 영화의 성공으로 뒤퐁과 프로인트는 할리우드로 이주했고 이후 누아르 영화에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. He leans out of the window at full speed, as happens a momentous mishap: his jacket gets tangled on the window lever so unhappy that it ejects the suction force out of the window.

무르나우의 가장 중요한 영화 중 한 편이자 오랜 세월 동안 사라졌다가 기적적으로 복원된 “잃어버린” 걸작. 현재는 무르나우의 영화적 발전에서 “미싱 링크”에 해당하는 작품으로 여겨지고 있다. 게르하르트 하우프트만의 소설을 느슨하게 각색한 작품으로, 성적 고착과 죽음의 악몽 같은 세계를 몽타주와 트릭효과를 통해 마법과도 같이 그려내고 있다. 시골마을의 서기로 아마추어 시인이기도 한 로렌츠는 어느 날 거리에서 아름다운 여자와 스쳐지나가게 된다. 그녀의 이미지에 사로잡힌 로렌츠는 마침내 아주 비슷하게 생긴 창녀를 찾아내어 그녀와 똑같은 모습으로 만들려 한다. 그러나 그의 집착은 해소되지 않고, 오히려 숙모와 그 정부의 손아귀에 붙잡혀 살인을 저지르도록 조종당한다. 인물 위에 드리워지는 그림자의 움직임을 통해 카오스의 이미지를 만들어내는 몽타주 시퀀스가 탁월하며, 무르나우의 작품 중 가장 불안정하고 강박적인 분위기를 가진 작품이다. 프리츠 랑의〈메트로폴리스〉에서 자본가 역을 맡았던 알프레드 아벨이 몽유병적인 젊은 시인으로 출연하여 인상적인 연기를 보여준다. Even without the benefit of sound, the 1922 German adaptation of Othello seems more operatic than Shakespearean. This may be due to the casting of Emil Jannings, to whom restraint and subtlety were strangers. Werner Krauss, of Cabinet of Dr. Caligari fame, is on hand as the duplicitous Iago. Appearing as the unfortunate Desdemona is Lea Von Lenkeffy, better known as Lya de Putti. Produced on an elaborate scale, Othello may not be true to the letter of Shakespeare, but is undeniably a smorgasbord of visual delights.
