Merchant Ivory is the longest running partnership in the history of cinema. As a film production entity, Merchant Ivory was founded in 1961 by producer Ismail Merchant (1936–2005) and director James Ivory (b. 1928). Merchant and Ivory were life and business partners from 1961 until Merchant's death in 2005. During their time together they made 43 films.

He longs to reach out to people, especially to Hindus, in order to promote the Hindu Faith, and be known as a writer. He does get considerable success, so much so that he becomes famous as a miracle worker, having cured a man of sharing intimacy with his bicycle; prevented a man from believing that he can fly; and convincing a young woman to end her fast. His fame spreads all over the island and thousands throng to seek his blessings, which he does dole out quite benevolently, without charging any fees from the poor and the needy. He then decides to spread his wings by challenging the local politician Pandit Narayan Chandrashekhar alias Cyrus T., and takes over The Hindu Organization, thence opening his way to a seat in the prestigious Member of the Legislative Assembly

Preaching a sexual freedom, his daughter's sexual discovery begins at an early age and betrays her when the family moves to Hanover in America. Her overt sexuality clashes with the values of her teenage American peers and gives her a problematic reputation. Meanwhile, her brooding brother copes with his own interior pain regarding his past, only comfortable communicating within the domestic space.

데벤(Deven)은 대학에서 힌디 문학을 가르치고 있다. 하지만 그가 진짜 관심을 갖고 있는 것은 우르두어다. 데벤은 잡지사 편집장의 부탁으로 우르두어 시의 살아있는 전설이라 할 수 있는 누르(Nur)를 인터뷰하게 된다. 인도의 유명 시인인 누르는 그의 추종자들과 여러 명의 부인들, 친척들을 거느리며 편안한 삶을 영위하고 있다. 들뜬 마음으로 누르를 만나기 위해 보팔(Bhopal)로 떠난 데벤은 뚱뚱한 술주정뱅이인 그의 모습에 짐짓 놀라고 만다. 데벤은 누르의 시를 녹음하기 위해 낡은 테이프 녹음기를 살 돈을 모으는가 하면, 누르의 첫 번째 부인 사피야(Safiya)를 매수하기도 한다. 매음굴에 방을 얻어 일주일 동안 누르와 함께 있으며 그의 시를 녹음하려 하지만 녹록지가 않다. 끊임없이 나타나는 자칭 누르의 팬들 역시 방해만 될 뿐이다. 누르의 아름다운 둘째 부인 베검(Begum)은 시인으로 인정받고 싶어 하는 여성이다. 하지만 데벤은 베검을 무시하고, 누르와 마찬가지로 데벤 역시 자신의 처자식에게 무관심하다. 결국 실망만 안고 돌아온 데벤은 누르가 보낸 소포를 하나 받게 된다. 그 안에 누르의 시들이 들어 있다. 그리고 누르가 죽음을 앞두고 두려워하고 있었다는 걸 알게 된다.
