Tsukiko, whose father died before she was born, lives with her mother Yoko and they provide mutual support for each other. One day, Yoko comes home completely drunk with Kenji, a young man with blond hair, and tells Tsukiko, "I'm going to marry him."

Drawing influence from the street musicians of Miyagi, four high school students form a band and spend their free time practicing for their school's upcoming festival. When the festival is abruptly concealed, they come up with a dimwitted strategy of faking a bomb threat to the school in order to force the principal to change his mind. Their plan seems to work at first, but when a real bomb goes off, the group is forced to take responsibility for the explosion and they are kicked out of school. The year is 1575 in feudal Japan. Oda Nobunaga's (Kippei Shiina) forces defeat Takeda Katsuyori, when Nagashino Castle was besieged during the Battle of Nagashino. The next year Oda Nobunada decides to build a lavish new castle symbolizing his unification of various factions. The castle named Azuchi Castle will be built near water and high enough to be seen from the capital city of Kyoto. Director Mitsutoshi Tanaka's adaptation of Kenichi Yamamoto's novel of the same name received the 33rd Japan Academy Film Prize for Excellent Art Direction.

Hanako is a mother, who was not enthusiastic when her husband took in two foster children some years ago. He died not long afterward, leaving her alone to care for the youngsters, Koya and Torataro, a task that she rose to with a passion. As the two boys graduate from high school, Hanako has become not only a devoted parent but the neighborhood's most reliable mother in the Osaka style: strong, responsible, irreverent. After the two boys leave school they also leave home, though Torataro continues to work in the family factory. Koya secures employment at a restaurant, where he is forced to put up with the bullying of an older colleague. Unable to take it any more, he runs away, and Hanako and Torataro look for him. They eventually find him pursuing his dream of becoming a professional musician.

The 95-year-old director shot the film in his hometown of Ishiuchi, Hiroshima. The story is based on a teacher he had when he was a child.

Kitahara Kazunori was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma in the fall of his second year in high school, and thereafter spent a year and 10 months battling the disease. Although he studied hard for the university examinations and was successfully admitted to his first choice, [the prestigious] Tokyo University, he only managed to visit it for a day before passing away. After that, last January [i.e. 2005], Kazunori's mother compiled the thoughts he had left behind and published it as a book, and it was adapted into this drama. Even as Kazunori had to fight his serious illness, he received support from his friends, school teachers and family members, and had warm relations with many people. This drama illustrates the 1 year and 10 months young Kazunori persevered together with the people around him.

모든 것에 환멸을 느끼고 있던 한 영화감독이 '내일은 내 생일'이라는 말을 매일매일 반복하는 신비스러운 소녀와 만난다. 그는 비디오 카메라를 통해 그녀와 소통을 시도한다.

Koji, a jazz musician, takes a cigarette break in between sets at a Tokyo nightclub. He witnesses a murder and runs into a girl, Linda, who is being pursued by the killers. The story of the silk industry and the young girls who worked as silk spinners in the early 1900s in Japan. The silk mills were located in Okaya which lies just beyond the Nomugi Pass. The women and girls worked in a hot, humid atmosphere without rest, and endured those conditions and sexual harassment to earn money for their poor families. Across the ocean, it was the great depression in America.

억척스러운 아내 오우메와 함께 인쇄소를 운영하는 소키치는 고단한 인쇄소 일에 지쳐있던 와중에 키쿠요를 만나 외도를 하게 되고 세 아이를 낳게 된다. 경제적인 도움이 전혀 없는 소키치에게 진저리를 치는 키쿠요는 결국 오우메 앞에 나타나고 세 아이를 맡겨놓고 종적을 감춘다. 금전적인 어려움을 겪고 있던 이들 부부에게 세 아이는 큰 짐이 된다. 세 아이를 어떻게든 돌려보내라는 오우메의 등쌀에 못이겨서 갈팡질팡하던 소키치는 자의반 타의반의 사고로 막내 아이가 죽음에 이르게 되자 남은 두 아이를 직접 처리할 결심을 한다.
