Driven to fight against the erosion of civil and human rights following the CIA-backed military coup of 1964 and the brutal, racist right-wing dictatorship that followed, the revolutionary leaves behind his wife and son to take up arms, becoming a notorious enemy to the power structure.

After another day at work, Virgílio turns on the answering machine at home and hears a disturbing message. It's a message from Clara, communicating the end of their relationship. Virgílio then listens to the message repeatedly, seeking some meaning. Breaking up is not the problem; the problem is that Virgílio has no idea who Clara is.

At the end of a tough workweek an assistant congressman and his friend go to an abandoned room in the Capitol building to relax and smoke a joint. While trying to unwind the assistant congressman complains about his job. He is doing all he can to cover up his boss' scandalous sex affair but nothing seems to be working. "Things can't get any worse", he proclaims. . . but they do!

Five maids in São Paulo are observed in this episodic, impressionistic film. The women interact with each other, ride busses, work, and have longings: Rai for a husband, Créo for her lost daughter, Roxane for a career in modeling. Quitéria is naive, a gull for thieves. Cida has a husband and also a lover. While each woman gets what she wishes for (more or less), it doesn't always make things better.
