자타공인 불량선생, 학생들을 위해 파이터가 되다! 죽기 살기로 버티기만 하면 본전! 고등학교 생물교사인 42살의 스콧 보스(케빈 제임스). 대학시절 레슬링 선수로 활약하기도 했지만 그건 20년 전 이야기. 한때 모범 교사 상을 받은 바도 있지만 그마저 수년 전 이야기. 지금은 무능하고 불성실하고 열정마저 사라진 자타공인 불량선생이다. 어느 날 교장은 예산부족으로 교사들의 연봉을 동결시키고 특별활동마저 없애겠다는 발표를 한다. 학생과 교사의 입장을 무시한 교장의 횡포에 화가 난 스콧은 해고 위기에 놓인 음악교사 마티(헨리 윙클러)를 도와주기로 마음먹는다. 마티가 계속 근무하려면 적어도 학년말까지 4만 8천 달러를 마련해야 할 처지. 저녁에 시민권 시험을 대비하는 외국인들을 가르치는 일까지 하게 된 스콧은 과외를 부탁하는 니코를 통해 이종격투기 대회에 참가하면 큰 돈을 벌 수 있다는 것을 알게 된다. 이종격투기 선수 출신인 니코의 도움으로 작은 대회에 출전하게 된 스콧은 첫 방에 KO로 나가 떨어지고 만다. 그러나 스콧은 좌절하지 않고 작은 대회에 출전하며 계속 돈을 모으기 시작한다. 스콧이 짝사랑 하던 양호교사 플로렌스(셀마 헤이엑)도 조금씩 마음을 열고, 스콧은 수업시간에도 열정적으로 아이들을 가르친다. 드디어 이기면 5만 달러, 지기만 해도 1만 달러를 챙길 수 있는 진짜 UFC 대회에서 제의가 들어오고, 스콧은 주위의 만류에도 대회에 출전한다. 그러나 상대는 일명 ‘사형 집행인’으로 불리는 켄 디트리히인데…
