불경을 얻기 위해 길을 나선 삼장법사는 천계를 어지럽힌 죄로 500년 동안 오행산에 갇혀 있던 손오공을 만나게 된다. 금고아를 쓴 채 관세음보살의 가르침대로 삼장법사와 함께하게 된 손오공은 위험 상황에 닥칠 때마다 그를 지키려 나서지만 번번히 오해만 불러일으키고, 마지막으로 저팔계와 사오정까지 합류하면서 모두 함께 서역으로 발걸음을 재촉한다. 한편, 천 년의 삶을 누리며 악행을 저질러 온 백골정은 영원한 생명을 얻기 위해 호시탐탐 삼장법사의 목숨을 노리게 되는데….

In 2014, Tsai Ming-Liang was invited to make a film for the MarseilleFID, Marseille International Film Festival. Since he was not familiar with Marseille, he decided to make a film as tourist, capturing the beautiful Mediterranean sunshine in the late summer of that year. He also invited famous French actor, Denis Lavant, to appear alongside Lee Kang-Sheng playing Xuanzang. "Journey to the West" was invited to be the opening short film at the Berlin International Film Festival the same year.

The story is based on an episode of the novel Journey to the West. The film features puppet live action, about 30% of the movie, with animated 3D backgrounds and characters.

Neddie (Dorothy's son) programs a computer belonging to the Wizard's son, Frank, to take him and Toto 2 to China. Once there, they are met by the Monkey Prince who steals the computer. Unless the other Oz Kids can find them, Neddie and Toto 2 will never get back to Emerald City!

지존보는 500년전의 세계로 와서 자하란 여자를 만나는데 이 여자는 500년후에 백정정과 춘삼십낭의 사부가 되는 반사대사이다. 자하는 바로 여래신등의 심지로 언니와 한몸이나 자신의 몽중인을 찾으러 속세로 나온다. 자신의 자청보검을 뽑을 수 있는 사람이 그녀의 꿈속의 낭군. 지존보는 자하가 월광보합을 갖고 있어서 어떻게든 월광보합으로 500년후의 세상으로 가서 백정정을 구하려고 한다. 한편 자신의 배필감은 자신의 자청보검을 뽑을 수 있다고 믿고 있던 자하는 지존보가 자청보검을 뽑는 것을 보고 자신의 낭군으로 점찍어 놓는다. 한편 지존보는 자하에게서 월광보합을 얻으려고 사랑한다고 거짓말을 한다. 그러나 지존보에게 사랑하는 여자가 있다는 걸 안 자하는 떠나고 다시 사부님을 만난 지존보는 사제들과 함께 우마왕에게 잡힌다. 우마왕은 지존보를 자신의 여동생인 향향과 혼인시키려 하고 자신이 생명을 구해줬던 자하를 자신의 첩으로 만드려고 한다. 몰래 도망을 친 지존보는 거미줄동굴로 가 백정정을 만난다. 그는 500년후의 세상으로 돌아갈 필요가 없게되자 당장 그녀와 혼인을 하려한다. 하지만 그의 마음은 이미 자하에게로 기울어져 있었으니. 이런 지존보의 마음을 안 백정정은 그의 곁을 떠나고 지존보는 관세음보살을 찾아가 손오공이 되겠다고 말하며 절대로 여자를 사랑하지 않겠다고 맹세하는데

손오공은 당삼장과 서경을 구하러 가지 않고 사부 담상장을 먹으면 불로장생한다는 말에 혹해 우마왕과 결탁, 당삼장을 죽이려 한다. 이에 관세음이 나타나 손오공을 꾸짖지만 손오공은 잘못을 뉘우치지 않고 오히려 큰소리를 치자 격분한 관세음은 손오공을 소멸시킨다. 이에 당삼장이 자신의 목숨을 바치면서 손오공의 환생을 간청하자 손오공을 인간으로 환생시키기로 약속한다. 그로부터 500년 후, 손오공은 오악산 산적무리들의 우두머리인 지존보로 태어난다. 그런 어느날 춘삼십랑과 백정정이라는 두 요괴가 나타나 지존보에게 발바닥에 점이 세 개 있는 사람을 찾으라고 협박한다. 이들은 당삼장을 먹으면 불로장생한다는 사실에 당삼장이 환생한다는 소식을 듣고 분명히 손오공과 만날 것이라고 판단, 손오공을 찾아온 것이다. 그리고 얼마 후에 우마왕까지 합세해 요괴들간의 결전이 벌어진다.

Though portrayed as a literal, if rather anthropomorphized, monkey in the original legends, this film substitutes the spindly comic actor Norihei Miki, sans makeup.

Tang Seng is frowning, Zhu Bajie retreats before the battle, and Monkey King plans to ask the wife of the Bull Demon King to extinguish the fire with a plantain fan.
