天竺を目指して西への旅を続ける三蔵法師とお供になった孫悟空、猪八戒、沙悟浄だが、ある川を船で進んでいた4人は巨大な魚に襲われる。4人は空にできた不思議な穴を通って異なる土地に飛ばされるが、そこは女性しか住んでいない“女人国”で、その女王と三蔵法師は互いに好意を抱く。やがて“女人国”のおきてで4人は処刑されそうになるが、女王の計らいで脱出に成功。しかし“女人国”から元の世界に戻る方法は分からず……。

暴れ者の孫悟空は五行山に幽閉されてから500年後、天竺を目指す三蔵法師に封印を解かれ、三蔵法師の護衛として旅に同行する。道中新たな仲間も加わった一行の前に、永遠に美しい自分を維持すべく三蔵法師の命を狙う妖怪・白骨夫人が立ちはだかる。白骨夫人はさまざまな謀略を駆使し、ついに三蔵法師を手中に収める。

In 2014, Tsai Ming-Liang was invited to make a film for the MarseilleFID, Marseille International Film Festival. Since he was not familiar with Marseille, he decided to make a film as tourist, capturing the beautiful Mediterranean sunshine in the late summer of that year. He also invited famous French actor, Denis Lavant, to appear alongside Lee Kang-Sheng playing Xuanzang. "Journey to the West" was invited to be the opening short film at the Berlin International Film Festival the same year.

The story is based on an episode of the novel Journey to the West. The film features puppet live action, about 30% of the movie, with animated 3D backgrounds and characters.

Neddie (Dorothy's son) programs a computer belonging to the Wizard's son, Frank, to take him and Toto 2 to China. Once there, they are met by the Monkey Prince who steals the computer. Unless the other Oz Kids can find them, Neddie and Toto 2 will never get back to Emerald City!

「西遊記」をベースにしたラブ・ストーリーの第１部。人間に転生した孫悟空の恋を描く。天竺への旅から500年後、山賊チー・チンポウの元に、美人の姉妹が迷い込む。実は姉妹は、三蔵を食べるために孫悟空を探していた妖怪姉妹。二人の企みを知った菩提老師が、チンポウの前に現れ、姉妹の正体とチンポウが実は孫悟空の生まれ変わりであることを教える。やがて姉妹もチンポウの正体を知り、そこへ三蔵の肉を狙う牛魔王も現れて……。

In order to make up for all the trouble he's caused, he is sent on a mission to accompany a prince who is the son of the gods on a journey through a land filled with dangers, monsters, cannibals and demons.

The mythical adventures of the legendary Chinese trickster Monkey, who must outwit a variety of wily demons who stand in the way of him and his fellow Buddhist travelers. Though portrayed as a literal, if rather anthropomorphized, monkey in the original legends, this film substitutes the spindly comic actor Norihei Miki, sans makeup.

It is said that on this day, the Tang monk, master and apprentice went through thousands of mountains and rivers, and came to a place called Flame Mountain. The flames here stretched for hundreds of miles, blocking the road to the west. It turned out that Sun Dasheng made a disturbance in the Heavenly Palace five hundred years ago and knocked over the alchemy furnace of the Supreme Lord. The true fire of samadhi descended from the sky, accomplishing another tribulation on the path of learning the scriptures. Tang Seng is frowning, Zhu Bajie retreats before the battle, and Monkey King plans to ask the wife of the Bull Demon King to extinguish the fire with a plantain fan.
