소림사의 승려인 리롱은 갑작스런 차 사고로 친형과 형수가 사망하자 혼자 남은 조카를 돌보기 위해 미국 뉴욕으로 건너간다. 그곳에 살고 있는 친구의 설득으로 쿵푸 학원을 열게 되고 사회복지사 사라의 도움으로 조카도 잘 돌보며 미국 생활에 적응해 나간다. 하지만 그의 친구는 학원 개업을 위해 러시아 마피아에게 돈을 빌리고 어둠의 세계에 연루되게 된다. 평화를 사랑하고 무술을 신성하게 생각하는 리롱은 친구와 가족을 지키기 위해 결국 싸움판에 뛰어드는데...
