보석 강도단
거액의 보석을 수송하는 차량을 호위하던 알베르 구비용 형사는 일명 ‘캥캥’이라 불리는 전문 강도 마르셀 뤼라와 그의 일당에게 국도변에서 보석을 탈취 당한다. 캥캥은 범행을 의뢰한 레옹 브뤼네에게 보석을 건네고 약속된 사례금을 받지만 이를 독차지하기 작전에 가담한 조직원들을 하나씩 살해한다. 한편 구비용 형사도 자신의 아파트에서 죽은 채 발견된다. 사건을 조사한 경찰은 총기 조작 실수로 인한 사고사로 결론을 낸다. 하지만 구비용의 친구이자 동료인 루이 조스 경감은 그가 살해되었다고 확신하고 직접 수사에 착수한다. 그 과정에서 그는 구비용의 내연녀인 술집 종업원 나탈리 빌라르를 찾아간다. 조스 경감은 어린 시절부터 마음이 여려 온갖 골칫거리를 자초하던 구비용이 경찰로 일하는 중에도 나탈리를 통해 친분을 맺은 범죄자들을 봐주었다는 사실을 알게 된다. 나탈리는 자신의 남동생 레옹 빌라르가 캥캥에게 살해당한 조직원 중 하나임을 알게 되고, 조스 경감의 수사에 도움을 주기로 한다. 마침 조스 경감은 한 범죄조직이 우편수송열차를 이용한 현금 절도를 준비 중이라는 첩보를 입수한다. 그는 나탈리를 통해 이들의 범행계획을 캥캥에게 알려서 그가 중간에서 현금을 탈취하도록 유인한다. 정보를 챙긴 캥캥은 나탈리를 살해한 뒤 조스 경감의 바람대로 동료들과 함께 현금수송 현장으로 향한다. 당초 범행을 계획한 조직과 캥캥의 조직이 충돌하면서 유혈극이 벌어지고 캥캥은 목숨을 잃는다. 이로써 조스 경감은 친구를 대신한 복수에 성공하게 된다.
