France, 1815. After his defeat at Waterloo, Napoleon heads for exile. Royalists occupy Paris and attempt to restore the monarchy. However, the battle doesn't seem to be over. Yan is a successful artist. One day he is waiting for his date Florence to turn up at his apartment. As the doorbell rings, he finds another young woman in underwear on his doorstep: his neighbor Eva! She tells him she locked herself out of her apartment and insists that he helps her. Whilst Yan is trying to enter Eva's apartment via their adjoining balcony, his phone rings. It is Florence, and she is not impressed when a female voice answers the phone. At this point, Eva's rabidly jealous boyfriend Boris returns home. Seeing Yan in his apartment, he deduces that Eva has been having an affair behind his back. Florence then turns up and Yan tries in vain to explain the situation. By chance, Florence's husband suddenly puts in an appearance. After that, it all starts to get a bit complicated.

미국 중산층 가정 출신인 청년 찰리 호먼(Charles Horman: 존 쉐아 분)은 아내 베시(Beth Horman: 시시 스페이식 분)와 같이 남미의 칠레에 가서 그곳에서 불편한 생활을 마다않고 자그마한 신문 등 출판물을 만들며 살고 있다. 찰리는 데이빗, 프랭크, 테리(Terry Simon: 멜라니 메이론 분) 등 의기투합한 젊은이들과 나름대로의 인생관, 세계관을 펴고 있다. 뉴욕에 살고 있는 아버지 애드 호먼(Ed Horman: 잭 레몬 분)은 그러한 아들 찰리가 못마땅하다. 랄리의 아내, 그러니까 며느리가 돼 있는 베시가 아들을 그렇게 만들었다고 여기고 베시를 싫어하는 터였다. 그런데 칠레에 가 있는 아들 찰리에게 문제가 생겼다. 실종됐다는 베시의 연락이다. 칠레로 달려온 아버지는 베시로부터 실종 경위를 듣는다. 그 나라에서 쿠데타가 일어난 날 찰리와 베시의 친구인 테리는 '비냐'라는 곳에 가 있었는데, 관광 여행으로 베시는 바쁜 일로 동행하지 못했다. 그런데 비냐에서 찰리는 그 나라 군대의 쿠데타를 보게 되었는데, 미국의 고급장교들이 비냐에 왜 와 있는가하며 의심했다고 한다. 바로 찰리는 이 나라 쿠데타에 미군이 개입돼 있다는 심증을 갖게 된 것이다. 그 단계에서 찰리는 실종이 아닌 쿠데타군이 잡아간 것이다. 그런데 더더욱 재미있는 건 쿠데타군은 미대사관의 허락이 없이는 감히 미국 시민을 어쩌지 못하도록 되어있는데.

사촌뻘 되는 유부녀 소냐를 사랑하는 청년 보리스 그루센코(우디 알렌 분)은 가망없는 겁쟁이지만, 나폴레옹 군대가 침입해 오자 하는 수 없이 러시아군에 입대하기로 한다. 전선으로 떠나기 전 보리스는 가족들과 함께 오페라를 관람하고, 그곳에서 미망인 알렌산드드로프나 백작부인(올가 조지스 피콧 분)의 추파를 받는다. 그러나 그녀의 곁에는 그녀를 지키는 질투심 많은 구혼자(해롤드 골드 분) 가 있었고, 그들은 할 수 없이 나중을 기약하며 헤어진다. 전투에 투입된 보리스는 걸핏하면 넘어지거나 달아나지 않으면, 칼을 부러뜨리는 등 말썽만 일으키다, 전쟁터에서 도망치기 위해 프랑스 대포 안에 몸을 숨긴다. 그러나 보리스의 이러한 행동은 그의 운명을 바꿔놓는다. 대포가 발사되어 튕겨져 나간 보리스는 프랑스 장군들의 막사에 떨어져 엉겹결에 그들을 죽이게 되고, 결국 전쟁영웅이 되어 돌아온다. 러시아로 돌아온 보리스는 백작부인과 열정적인 하룻밤을 보내고, 이를 알게 된 그녀의 광적인 구혼자는 보리스에게 결투를 신청한다. 저격수 뺨치는 사격솜씨를 자랑하는 인물과의 결투에서 자신이 죽게 될 거라고 생각한 보리스는 소냐에게 청혼을 하고, 소냐는 내키지는 않지만 내일 죽게 될 거라는 말하는 보리스를 차마 뿌리치지 못해 승낙한다. 그러나 보리스는 운 좋게도 결투에서 살아서 돌아오는데, 이번에는 소냐가 나폴레옹 암살 계획을 꾸미고, 그러나 암살 계획은 실패로 끝나고 보리스는 총살형에 처해진다.
