아자드(장 폴 벨몽도)와 랄프(로버트 후세인), 렌지(레나토 살바토리), 헬렌(니콜 칼팬)은 어마어마한 값어치가 나가는 에메랄드를 훔치기 위해 대부호인 타스코의 집에 침입한다. 하지만 금고를 여는 도중에 그만 순찰 중인 부패 경찰 자카리아(오마 샤리프)의 눈에 이들의 차가 발각된다. 다행히 아자드의 기지로 자카리아를 따돌리고 무사히 에메랄드를 빼낸 일당은 그리스를 빠져나가기 위해 미리 구해놓은 화물선으로 간다. 하지만 태풍으로 파손된 배를 수리하기 위해 5일을 기다려야 하는 처지에 놓인다. 한편 눈치가 빠른 자카리아는 아자드를 에메랄드 도둑으로 의심하고 이들의 뒤를 캐고 다닌다. 두 사람이 아테네 시가지에서 벌이는 자동차 추격 장면이 이 영화의 백미. 아자드 일당의 은신처를 찾아낸 자카리아는 에메랄드를 자신에게 넘기면 그리스를 무사히 빠져나가게 해주겠다며 거래를 제안하고, 이때부터 에메랄드의 소유권을 두고 아자드와 자카리아의 두뇌 싸움이 벌어진다. 쫓고 쫓기는 5일이 지난 후, 자카리아를 안전하게 따돌렸다고 믿고 화물선으로 온 아자드는, 그러나 경찰에 포위된 사실을 알고 자카리아에게 에메랄드를 넘겨주기로 한다. 마지막, 아자드와 자카리아의 대결 장면. 에메랄드에 대한 탐욕에 눈이 먼 자카리아는 아자드가 공중에 던진 에메랄드를 차지하려다 비처럼 쏟아지는 곡물에 파묻혀 최후를 맞고, 아자드는 유유히 도망친다. 특히 마지막 장면은 1982년에 해리슨 포드 주연의 영화 에 차용된 바 있다. So they persuade their successful colleague Alphonse to join their team. But the well thought-out coup fails, and Alphonse is the only one of them who ends up in jail for several years. When he's released, he's out for revenge.
