복잡다단한 가족사를 통해 가족의 의미를 짚어보는 작품. 레이천의 삶은 복잡하다. 기어이 아들을 낳고야 말겠다는 어머니의 집념으로 뒤늦게 막내 남동생을 얻었고, 자폐증에 걸린 삼촌까지 함께 살게 되면서 정신이 없다. 여기에 임신까지. 그들은 사랑의 힘으로 가족을 지켜낼 수 있을까?

외형은 갱스터 영화이지만, 가혹한 운명으로부터 벗어나지 못하는 한 인간의 비극을 그리고 있는 영화이다. 체(Che)는 동생을 대신해 교도소에서 3년간을 보낸 뒤, 고향인 난팡가오(Nanfangao)로 돌아온다. 하지만, 과거와 달라진 것은 없다. 연인 페이(Pei)는 충격으로 실어증에 걸렸고, 어머니를 버리고 일본으로 갔던 아버지는 다시 난팡가오로 돌아와 토착세력과 영역다툼을 벌인다. 이 벗어날 수 없는 구렁텅이에서 체에게 위안이 되는 것은 어머니에 대한 기억이다. 결국 그는 자신이 지옥과도 같은 이 모든 상황을 정리하기 위해 스스로 악마가 되기로 결심한다. 난팡가오 주변의 섬 주민들은 나비를 악마의 영혼이라고 믿는다. 연약하고 아름다워 보이는 나비에 대한 원주민들의 생각은 첸에게 매우 역설적으로 보인다. 오히려, 나약함과 강인함, 선과 악의 얼굴을 동시에 지닌 첸에게 나비는 어머니의 영혼처럼 느껴진다. 그리고, 원주민들이 주로 모여 사는 난팡가오는 이 암울하고 비극적인 공간으로서의 배경의 역할에 너무나 잘 어울린다. -김지석(수석 프로그래머)

Compulsive gambler Jih (Tai-bao) tries to bamboozle dim-bulb gang boss Black Dog (Chen-Nan Tsai) in this satirical action-comedy that pokes fun at Taiwanese culture. To fend off Black Dog's attempt to collect a gaming debt, Jih says he can't repay the money because he needs it for the funeral of his father (Bin-hui Lee) -- who once saved the mafioso's life. Trouble is, Jih's father is alive, and Black Dog plans to attend the memorial service.

It's the year 1999, Hei-shu, a long-term unemployed man, finally gets a job in a local musical band, performing at funerals and weddings. One day, Hei-shu's cat is missing. He later suspects that the cat has turned into a woman.

College student Hsiao Chih has been dreaming of studying abroad and having foreign affairs. His plan to fulfill this dream in the summer is, however, discouraged by economic down turn in Taiwan. Just as he feels depressed about the need to spend a long summer back home, taking care of his old grandma and her grocery store, here comes a Western girl named Elisa. One thing leads to another, Hsiao Chih and two women - his grandma and Elisa a girl from afar - spend a whole summer under the same roof...

To achieve his dream of being a trumpet player, a man leaves his hometown and works in a touring operetta troupe. He falls in love with a girl but then contracts tuberculosis, forcing him to give up the trumpet.

방학이 되자 17살 캉이는 칼룽의 집으로 온다. 캉이의 아버지 아 시우는 교통사고로 아내와 자신의 시력을 잃었다. 아 시우는 새 아내 바오 후이와 마사지실을 운영하며, 캉이와 그녀의 저능아 남동생 아키를 부양하고 있다. 18살 아핑은 아버지와 아 시우의 오랜 친구이자 지역조직의 보스인 송에게 맡겨진다. 캉이와 아핑은 서로에게 이끌리고, 캉이를 좋아하는 라이벌조직 보스의 양자 아림은 이에 분노하여 조직간의 싸움을 촉발한다.

Ah Chung is going through the liminal stage of finding his place and aim in life. He is sent by his mother to a boot camp, training as one of the Eight Generals. This is a job in performing as a god in Taiwanese popular rituals and Ah Chung's mother believes it can bring spiritual and social goodwill to the much-troubled family: Financially strained mother who is a performer of "low-brow" entertainment, a kid brother who is somewhat retarded, a half-sister who is raped by his alcoholic father, and Ah Chung's listlessness which is easily sucked in by the local gang rivalry...

오해와 엇갈림으로 가득한 이틀 동안의 낮과 밤을 통해 대만의 도시적 삶을 신랄한 블랙코미디로 보여 주는 작품. 도시 공무원과 사업가, 광고업자 등 다양한 인물들이 도시의 어둠에서 겪는 일을 그린 영화로 대만 사회의 전통적 가치관과 문화의 퇴락에 대한 에드워드 양의 관심이 투영된 작품이다. 밝고 경쾌한 리듬과 수다스러운 대사를 통해 신세대들의 사랑과 경제, 예술과 종교적인 위선을 보여준다. 타이페이를 위장 도시로 표현하면서, 밝은 면보다는 암울한 면이 더 많은 곳이라는 것을 암시한다.

A couple and their son and daughter struggle through their divorce. The children try to cope after moving away to their grandparents', who live by the ocean, with the help of fairy tales that are told to them.

In this drama, the harsh treatment of women in Chinese society is examined and subtly commented upon as it tells the tale of an impoverished woman living in Shanghai, circa 1910 who tries to support her brother and sister-in-law. A marriage to a wealthy man is arranged for her, and reluctantly she endures it, even though she does not love the man who is as cruel as he is wealthy. His mother is also brutally unkind to her. She then has a son, but her struggles are not over when her husband dies and only leaves her a modest inheritance. Her wretched life has made her bitter, and so she begins making her son suffer as she die; she also becomes addicted to opium.

텅 빈 새벽을 울리는 총성. 경찰 수사를 피해 도망가다 다리를 다친 혼혈소녀를 우연히 카메라에 담게 된 소년은 사진 속 소녀에게 점점 이끌린다. 그 무렵 갑작스레 출세의 기회를 잡게 된 의사 ‘이립중’과 슬럼프에 빠진 소설가 아내 ‘주울분’은 권태로운 부부생활에 지쳐있었고, 이때, 소녀가 무심코 걸어온 장난전화를 아내가 받게 되면서 조용했던 네 일상은 이윽고 기묘한 비극으로 번지기 시작하는데…

보수적인 방직업자 아룽과 전문직 여성 수첸은 오래된 연인사이다. 수첸의 아버지는 파산한 실업가로 아룽에게 경제적인 도움을 기대하고, 수첸은 자신의 환경에서 벗어날 수가 없다. 아룽은 자신과 너무 다른 수첸의 세계를 이해할 수 없어 정서적 파탄을 경험한다. 어느날 수첸은 직장을 잃고 둘 사이는 더욱 멀어진다. 아룽과 헤어진 수첸은 친밀한 인간관계를 포기한 대가로 좋은 직장을 얻고, 아룽은 논쟁 끝에 칼에 찔려 길바닥에서 죽음을 맞이한다.

1막 1960년대의 대만. 친구가 없는 마우는 그의 상상 속에 갇혀 지낸다. 그는 샤오펜이라는 소녀와 친구가 되지만 펜은 그녀의 부모님과 외국으로 이민을 가고, 마우는 그의 공룡 장난감과 함께 외로이 남는다. 2막 1960년대의 대만. 샤오 펜은 농구선수가 되고싶어 하는 유난히 키가 작은 남자친구를 둔 사춘기 소녀이다. 펜은 자신의 집에 하숙 하는 대학생오빠를 짝사랑하지만 그녀의 언니와 그가 사귄다는 사실을 알고 상처를 받는다. 3막 1970년대의 대만. 두는 꿈과 현실속을 헤매는 대학생이다. 그는 항상 그의 삶이 꽉 막혔다고 생각한다. 마침내 그는 그의 꿈을 수영대회에서 찾는다. 4막 1980년대의 대만, 젊은 부부가 아파트로 이사를 온다. 아침에 그의 아내는 새 직장에 첫 출근을 하고 남편은 속옷바람으로 신문을 가지러 나갔다가 문이 닫혀 집에 못들어가는 처지가 된다.
