하이메 선생은 저소득층의 불량스러운 스페인계의 학생들이 주로 다니는 가필드 고등학교에 교사로 부임한다. 학교측도 이 문제를 고심하고 있으나 뾰족한 수가 없는 상태였다. 그런 학생들에게 하이메 선생은 희망을 심어주고, 야단도 쳐가며 공부를 시켜 급기야 대학에 진학할 수 있는 상급 배치고사를 보게 하려고 한다. 하지만 학교측은 이런 하이메 선생의 방식에 사사건건 반대한다. 우여곡절 끝에 드디어 시험을 치루게 되고 결과만 기다리던 중 그들에게 다가온 소식은 합격이 아니라, 시험 무효라는 충격적 결과였는데...
