Such is his discomfort with his living arrangements that he agrees to share the occupancy of another flat: he gets two nights a week, the owner (a sleazy frat-boy yuppie named Brian, soon to be married) and Ellen (a would-be painter seeking relief from her boring marriage) each get their seperate nights in the flat. Things go extremely well until Sam and Brian swap nights without telling Ellen, who attributes the "nice" things that happen around the place to the slob Brian, while berating the responsible Sam for his hedonistic lifestyle.

뉴욕시경 살인사건 전담반 민완형사 존 모스(John Moss : 제임스 우즈 분)는 파티 킬러라는 광적인 살인범에게 번번히 농락당해, 그를 잡겠다는 일종의 복수심에 사로잡혀 있다. 한편 할리우드 스타 닉 랭(Nick Lang : 마이클 J. 폭스 분)은 인디아나 존스 식의 만화 같은 인물 역에 식상한 끝에, 좀 더 어른스런 배역을 따내기 위한 연습으로 신분을 가장하여 신참 형사로서 모스가 근무하는 서에 배치된다. 랭의 열렬한 팬인 브링스 서장은 제일 믿음직스런 모스에게 랭의 보호역을 맡기는데, 이들 이질적인 두 사람이 파트너가 되다 보니 생기는 건 온통 말썽뿐이다. 킬러 수사에선 손 떼고 랭을 보호하는데 전력을 기울이라는 서장의 엄명에도 불구하고 모스는 위험한 빈민가까지 랭을 끌고 다니며 파티 킬러의 행적을 조사하고, 그러다 말썽이 생겨 서장에게 꾸지람을 듣는다. 게다가 이혼하고 혼자 사는 모스가 요즘 새로 사귀는 여자 수잔(Susan : 안나벨라 사이오라 분)의 마음을 랭이 가로채는 것처럼 보이자, 더욱 화가 난 모스는 암수를 써서 랭을 할리우드로 돌려보내려 하는데...

베트남의 한 전적지. 전우들끼리 농담을 주고 받는데서부터 시작된다. 갑자기 공격 명령이 떨어지고 병사들은 갑작스런 전투에 우왕좌왕한다. 전투 중에 제이콥(팀 로빈스 분)은 칼에 찔려 정신을 잃고만다. 20년 후 뉴욕, 제이콥은 지하철 안에서 눈을 뜬다. 텅빈 지하철 속을 헤매고 다니지만 승객들은 그에게 눈길조차 돌리지 않는다. 열차에서 내리려는 그의 눈 앞에 한 여인에게 달려있는 황금빛 꼬리가 발견되고 자신을 둘러싼 괴물의 존재를 인식하기 시작한다. 지하철에서 겪은 공포의 순간 이후 베트남에서의 악몽은 현실의 삶을 지배한다. 아들의 죽음과 전우들의 환상 등이 제이콥의 정신세계를 지배하고 끔찍한 강박관념에 시달린다. 자신을 짓누르는 상화에서 벗어나기 위해 과거의 전우들을 찾아 나서지만 그들의 갑작스런 사고만을 알게 될 뿐이다. 심상치 않은 징후들 속에서 제이콥은 자신과 베트남 참전 당시의 부대에 어떤 거대한 음모가 도사리고 있음을 느끼고 진실을 찾아 나선다. 그러나 곳곳에서 미스테리만이 발견되고 괴물의 존재, 악령의 환영들이 그를 둘러싼다. 과연 제이콥을 둘러싼 미 국방부의 비밀과 그의 삶과 죽음은 어떻게 연관된 것일까?

세 자매 중에 첫째가 한나, 둘째가 홀리, 막내가 리다. 한나는 록스타의 매니저인 엘리엇와 결혼했고, 리는 미술을 하는 중년남자와 동거 중이다. 그런데 한나의 남편 엘리엇은 처제인 리에게 묘한 감정을 느낀다. 결국 리와 엘리엇은 관계를 가지게 되고 엘리엇은 죄책감을 갖는다. 한편 홀리는 텔레비젼 프로듀서인 미키와 사랑에 빠지게 된다.
