프랑스 남부 지방을 여행하던 잭(앤드류 심슨)은 히치 하이킹을 통해 영국으로 돌아가려 하지만, 도무지 차를 잡을 수가 없었다. 하는 수 없이 걷기를 시작하던 잭의 앞에 한 대의 차량이 서고, 그 안에는 남자(피에르 보랭거)와 다투는 여자(조세핀 드 라 바움)를 본 잭은 여자를 남자에게서 구출하게된다. 자신을 베로니카라 말하는 여자 역시 여행 중이었고, 히치 하이킹으로 통해 탄 차량에서 봉변을 당할 뻔 했던 것. 두 사람은 안전을 위해 남은 일정을 같이 다니기로 하고, 계속 히치 하이킹으로 영국으로 갈 차량을 모색한다. 그러던 중 한 대의 차량이 서고, 남자(그리자 - 프레드릭 피에롯)는 자신이 영국으로 가는 페리 선착장까지 데려다 주겠노라 제의한다. 노숙에 지친 잭은 그의 제안에 선뜻 응하지만, 어쩐지 베로니카는 그리자의 차를 내키지 않아한다. 하지만 잭의 권유로 그리자의 집으로 가게된 두 사람. 하지만 집의 분위기는 자꾸만 기이하게 흘러가고, 잭과는 달리 베로니카는 자꾸만 그들의 행동에 의심을 하게되는데...
