조무기(적룡)는 결혼식 당일날 서소강과 대결을 벌이고 그를 죽이지 않고 헐레벌떡 식에 참가한다. 이때 초대하지도 않은 문파에서 괴한들이 도착한다. 이 문파 수장의 목을 가지고 오는 자에게 후한 상을 내린다는 말을 하고 떠난다. 심복 곡봉이 배신하고 장문의 목을 가지고 상대문파로 도망치는 사건이 발생한다. 조무기는 아내에게 내년 낙엽이 떨어질때까지 꼭 돌아오겠다. 죽어서도 오겠다는 말을 남기고 떠난다. 상대문파는 강호에서도 독을 쓰는 걸로 악명이 높은데 그들과 대결하다 조무기의 몸에 독이 퍼진다. 구사일생으로 살아난 조무기는 이 독을 치료할 자를 소개받는다. 그리고 복수를 위해 당가보에 잠입하여 상관인이 아버지를 죽이지 않은 걸 알고 그와 협력하여 당가보 일당을 물리친 후 홀연히 떠난다.
