'신념이 있다면 무엇이든지 할 수 있다'는 아버지의 말씀을 되뇌이며 앙트완은 그녀에게 끈질기게 청혼했고, 우여곡절 끝에 결국 그녀는 승낙한다. 미용사의 남편이 되겠다고 하자 아버지는 심장마비로 돌아가셨고 어머니는 앙트완과 인연을 끊겠다고 선언한다. 그러나 앙트완에게 그런것은 안중에도 없었다. 그렇게 결혼한 둘은 십년 동안 단 한차례 사소한 일로 다투었을 뿐 서로를 극진히 사랑하며 함께 살아간다. (그 한차례 다툼도 앙트완에겐 심장마비를 일으킬 수 있을 정도의 큰 사건이었다.) 그러던 어느 폭풍우가 몰아치던 날 둘은 사랑을 나누었고, 마틸드는 폭풍우 속으로 사라진 후 다시는 돌아오지 않았다. 그것이 앙트완이 마틸드를 본 마지막이었던 것이다. 오직 한통의 편지만 남긴 채.
