A septuagenarian widow feels revived by an old painter with whom she falls in love.

아르메니아에서 프랑스 마르세이유로 이주한 하콥(오마 샤리프)의 가족은 가난에 시달리면서도 서로를 사랑하고 힘들게 일하면서 프랑스 사회에 정착하며 살고 있다. 하콥의 아들 아자드는 가족들과 갈등을 겪으면서도 자신의 이름을 프랑스 사람들이 발음하기 쉬운 ‘삐에르 자카르’로 개명하는 등의 노력을 통해 프랑스 사회에 적응하기 위해 노력했고, 결국 프랑스의 유명 극작가로 성공한다. 그는 아르메니아식 이름을 고집하는 고지식한 부모님에게 자신이 대본을 쓴 연극을 보여드리기 위해 파리로 초대한다. 삐에르는 부모님을 극진히 모시기 위해 5성급 호텔로 모시는 등 정성을 다해 보지만 그의 부모님은 아들의 집이 아닌 호텔에 머물러야 한다는 사실이 야속하기만 하다. 결국 삐에르와 그의 아버지 하콥은 서로에게 험한 말을 퍼부으며 싸우게 되고 급기야 삐에르가 자신의 진심을 보이기도 전에 하콥은 숨을 거두고 만다. 상처받은 마음을 치유하기 위해 삐에르는 어머니와 오랜 시간을 함께 보내기로 한다. 그리고 어머니의 오랫 옛 이웃들이 살고 있으며 가족들이 프랑스에 처음 이민와서 살았던 왔던 지역의 고급 주택을 어머니께 선물한다.

아자드는 1915년에 아르메니아에서 태어난다. 1915~1923년에 있었던 터키 정부의 아르메니아인 대학살로 인해 어린 아자드는 아버지 하곱과 어머니 아락시, 이모 애나와 가이앤과 함께 프랑스 마르세이유로 강제 이주를 당한다. 프랑스에 도착한 아자드 가족은 문화적 충격과 가난에 시달리며 힘겹게 생활한다. 하지만 끈끈한 사랑 덕분에 프랑스 사회에 서서히 적응하게 된다. 또한 아자드는 자식에게 좋은 미래를 만들어 주려는 부모님의 헌신적인 노력으로 명문 학교를 졸업하고 엔지니어가 된다.

교사인 아버지와 재단사인 어머니를 둔 마르셀에게 있어 아버지는 신에 가까운 존재였다. 어머니는 장에 가실 때마다 마르셀을 교실에 맡기셨고 이런 순간마다 자신보다 큰 아이들을 가르치시는 아버지가 무척 존경스러웠다. 그러던 어느날 '어머니는 아이를 벌 주셨습니다'라는 칠판 글씨를 보고 '엄마는 나 벌 안줘'라고 반박했고, 제대로 글을 배운 적이 없는 마르셀이 글씨를 읽자 아버지는 무척 기뻐했으나 어린 아이는 아이답게 자라길 바라는 어머니는 마르셀에게 책도 교실도 금지시켰다. 마르셀의 동생이 태어나자 아버지는 공립학교로 전임을 갔고 노처녀였던 이모가 고급 공무원이며 부자인 이모부와 결혼했다. 그 여름 이모의 가족과 마르셀의 가족은 시골 농장으로 휴가를 떠났다. 마르셀에게 있어 신과 같던 존재였던 아버지는 이모부와 같이 있을 땐 경쟁적인 관계가 되었고, 특히 사냥에 있어서는 이모부를 따라가지 못한다. 어떻게 해서든 아버지가 자신에게 있어 제 자리를 찾기 원한 마르셀은 아버지와 이모부 몰래 사냥터에 따라가 아버지 앞으로 새를 몰아주려 하지만 길을 잃어버린다. 그러나 그곳에서 우연히 만난 릴리의 도움으로 길을 찾는다. 그 순간 총소리가 들리고 마르셀 앞에 새가 떨어진다. 아버지가 잡은 새였던 것이다. 드디어 사냥에 성공한 아버지. 그로 인해 마르셀은 아버지를 다시 만나게 된 것이다. 릴리와의 우정도 깊어만 가는데 어느덧 휴가의 마지막이 다가오고 있었다. 도시로 돌아가기 싫어진 마르셀은 릴리의 도움으로 가출을 시도하고, 릴리와 산으로 들어온 마르셀은 가정의 중요함을 깨닫고 다시 집으로 돌아온다.
