기장 프랭크 타운스(Frank Towns : 제임스 스튜어트 분)와 조종사 루 모란(Lew Moran : 리처드 아텐보로 분) 은 사막의 노동자들을 운송하기 위해 사하라 사막 위를 비행을 하던 중 무선 통신이 고장나게 된다. 프랭크는 가까운 공항에 착륙하여 비행기를 수리하는 대신 별 무리 없이 계속 비행할 수 있을 거라 생각하고 비행한다. 그러던 중 사막의 모래 폭풍을 만나게 되고 엔진 통풍구가 막히게 되어 오아시스에서 아주 먼 사막 한 가운데에 착륙하게 된다. 시간이 지나 갈 수록 사람들은 지쳐가고 물을 계속 줄어들어 간다. 이때 비행기 설계자 하인리히 도프만(Heinrich Dorfmann : 하디 크루거 분)의 도움으로 새 비행기 '피닉스'를 만들게 된다. 불사의 비행을 꿈꾸며 피닉스라 이름 짓는다. 물이 없어질 때까지 이들은 비행기를 완공하여 오아시 스를 찾아 떠나야 하지만 쉽지는 않다. 과연 이들은 물이 완전히 없어지기 전에 새 비행기 피닉스를 만들어 사막을 벗어날 수 있을지.
