에밀리와 그녀의 노모는 적군파에 의해 해방된 폴란드의 난민이다. 그들은 미국 전쟁포로의 생사확인을 위해 파견된 연합군 위원회의 운전병 노만을 만나게 된다. 말이 통하지 않음에도 불구하고 노만과 에밀리는 첫눈에 사랑에 빠진다. 노만은 에밀리와 그녀의 어머니를 미국으로 데려가려 하지만, 유일한 방법은 국경을 넘어 불법탈출하는 것이다. 에밀리는 노만이 준 돈으로 안내자를 구하지만 병약한 어머니는 탈출을 시도하기엔 이미 너무 쇠약한 상태다. 딸의 앞길에 방해가 되지 않기 위해 어머니는 몰래 목숨을 끊는다. 어머니의 장례식 후, 에밀리는 어머니가 자신을 위해 희생했다는 사실을 알게 되고 결국 서베를린에서 기다리는 노만을 버려 둔 채 이 곳에 남기로 결심한다. 수년이 흐른 뒤 에밀리는 또 다른 여행을 준비한다.

Growing-up village boy Marcin Debik feels bored of existence in his native place and not interested in realizing his father's ideas for living there for ever and making business there. Weirdness is evident before they even reach the place, in the form of a ranting maniac in a tree. More crazies are found freely wandering the grounds of the asylum, they being participants in an apparently revolutionary new system instituted by the asylum’s director. But the director seems just as nutty in his own way as the patients...
