전형적인 범죄 스릴러이지만, 돈 시겔 감독 특유의 긴박하면서도 막힘없는 스타일을 보여준다. 1950년대 샌프란시스코를 배경으로 옛날 샌프란시스코의 1909년 화재로 전소된 엄청난 규모의 수트로 실내 수영장, 오페라 하우스, 페리빌딩, 막 지어지기 시작한 고속도로 등 새로운 모습으로 단장하는 샌프란시스코의 모습도 볼거리이다.
