고고학 박사의 아들 루디는 신출귀몰한 희대의 골동품 절도범이다. 어느날 루디에게 상의할 문제가 있다고 하던 아버지가 돌연 행방불명되는 사건이 발생하고, 이스라엘로부터 전화 한 통이 걸려온다. 다급한 전화 목소리의 주인공은 바로 행방불명된 아버지. 아버지가 위기에 빠진 것을 직감한 루디는 이스라엘행 비행기에 오른다. 이스라엘에 도착한 루디는 아버지의 친구 핀리교수를 만나 아버지가 '디 오더'라는 종교 집단의 제1사도 사이러스에게 감금돼 있다는 얘기를 듣게 되지만 갑작스런 괴한의 습격으로 핀리 교수가 사망한다. 설상가상으로 살인자의 누명을 쓰게 된 루디는 이스라엘 경찰에 체포되고 경찰조사에서 자신의 결백과 아버지의 납치를 주장하지만 묵살당한 채 추방당할 위기에 처한다.
1920년 뉴욕의 뒷골목. 고아로 자란 크리스(Christopher Dubois: 쟝-끌로드 반담 분)는 소매치기 집단의 우두머리가 되고, 다른 갱단의 물건을 훔치다 발각되어 어느 배에 몰래 숨어든다. 그러나 밀항의 실패로 노예와 같은 생활을 하던 중, 영국인 에드가 도브스(Lord Edgar Dobbs: 로저 무어 분)가 지휘하는 해적선의 습격으로 다시 사로잡히는 신세가 된다. 에드가 도브스는 타이섬의 복싱 프로모터, 카오(Khao: 아키 알렝 분)가 이끄는 집단에 크리스를 팔아넘긴다. 6개월 후, 킥복싱 챔피언이 된 크리스는 티벳의 세계 무술인 시합인 GHAN GHENG에 출전할 것을 선고받자, 자신이 이길 경우 그들을 살려달라는 목숨을 위해 크리스는 생사를 건 혈투를 벌인다.
프랑스 외인 부대 병사인 리온(Lyon: 쟝-끌로드 반담)은 형이 중태에 빠져있다는 소식을 듣고 휴가를 신청하자 거절당하고 끝내는 탈영을 하게 된다. 외인 부대에서는 리온을 잡기 위해 추적자를 보내고, 리온은 뉴욕에 도착한 후 여비 마련을 위해 우연히 만난 죠슈아(Joshua: 해리슨 페이지 분)와 지하 주먹 싸움계에 뛰어든다. 혈전을 거듭하면서 돈을 마련한 리온은 죠슈아와 LA로 가지만 형도 이미 숨을 거두고 형수(Helene: 리사 펠리칸 분)는 리온을 오해해 그를 받아들이지 않는다. 그러나 리온은 신시아(Cynthia: 데보라 레나드 분)의 소개로 주먹싸움을 하며 번 돈을 계속 형수에게 익명으로 보낸다. 형수와의 관계를 오해한 신시아는 무적의 아시아 챔피언과의 싸움을 계략적으로 준비해 그를 함정에 빠뜨리려고 하나 리온은 그의 힘과 의지를 다해 시합에서 이긴다. 한편 그를 찾아온 추적자들은 형수와 조카딸을 위하는 리온을 풀어주고 화해를 한다.
