1955년형 시보레를 타고 미국 남서부 전역을 돌며 경주할 차를 찾아 헤매는 카레이서와 정비사. 자동차광인 이 콤비는 오로지 차에만 미쳐있고 꼭 필요한 경우가 아니면 서로 말도 건네지 않는다. 우연히 만나게 된 한 여자 그리고 주유소에서 만난 중년의 허풍선이 G.T.O.가 이들의 여정에 합류하고, 그들은 각자의 차를 걸고 워싱턴 DC까지 경주를 하기로 한다. 괴짜들의 자동차 경주에 삶에 대한 헬먼의 위트 넘치는 성찰이 담겨 있다.
