보비 듀피어는 20대 후반의 젊은이. 좋은 가문 출신인 그는 오히려 자신의 출신을 혐오한 나머지 클래식 음악가로서의 전도양양한 미래를 포기하고 남부의 한 석유 채취장에서 노동자로 일하며 식당 여종업원과 살고 있다. 듀피어는 이 노동을 통해 자신의 새로운 정체성을 찾기 위해 애쓰지만 분명한 건 그가 진정한 노동자가 되지는 못한다는 것. 듀피어는 아버지가 뇌일혈로 고통받으며 식물인간으로 살아가고 있다는 소식을 듣고 귀향한다. 하지만 아버지는 병약한 독재자일 뿐이고, 형은 꽉 막힌 클래식 음악인이며, 누이는 부르주아적 삶의 가치를 아무 생각 없이 추종하며 살고 있다. 듀피어의 가족은 그가 그렇게 벗어나기 위해 몸부림쳤던 그 기성사회인 것이다. 삶에 염증이 난 듀피어는 형의 약혼자인 캐서린을 유혹한 뒤 다시 자기 파괴적인 여행길에 오른다.
