어린 토토는 자신이 막 태어났을때 신생아실의 화재로 이웃집의 알프레드와 뒤바뀌어졌다고 생각한다. 그래서 토토는 어린시절 내내 알프레드가 자신의 운명을 빼앗아 버렸다는 생각으로 알프레드의 대한 질투심을 떨쳐버릴수 없었다. 그러한 토토에게 자신이 가장 좋아하는 누나 엘레스가 있었는데 누나도 토토를 좋아했다.어느 폭풍우가 치던날, 알프레드의 아버지 부탁으로 토토의 아버지 비행기 조종을 하게 되지만 추락하여 실종된다. 그일로 집안이 가난에 처하게 되자 토토는 더욱 누나에게 의지하게 된다. 그러던 중 엘리스가 알프레드와 데이트하는 것을 목격하게 된 토토는 깊은 상처를 받는다. 이에 앨리스는 토토에게 사랑을 확인시켜주기 위해 알프레드 집의 창고로 기름탱크를 안고 뛰어들어 자살하고 만다. 토토는 이 불행이 자신의 뒤바뀐 운명때문이라고 믿었고 그것을 보상받기 위해 비밀첩보원이 되리라 마음 먹는다. 세월이 흘러 토토는 건축설계사가 되지만 엘리스에 대한 그리움을 아직도 못버리고 살아간다. 그러던 어느날, 앨리스의 모습과 너무나 흡사한 이벨리느라는 여자를 알게되고 사랑에 빠진다. 그러나 그녀는 바로 알프레드의 아내였던 것이다. 토토를 더 사랑한 이벨리느는 알프레드를 버리고 토토와 도주하기로 마음먹지만 실패로 돌아가고 만다. 노인이 된 토토는 자신이 살아온 인생을 다시한번 생각하게 되고 이제는 재벌의 총수가 된 알프레드를 찾아나선다. 아직도 알프레드가 자신의 운명을 빼앗아 버렸다는 강박관념에서 벗어나지 못한 토토는 그를 죽이기로 마음먹은 것이다.

The main characters in this film are wives of rich men who have nothing to do because they have staff – like the cook, the maid, the hairdresser, the manicurist, the governess, the teacher, the tailor etc. – who work for them. Naturally, the wives themselves do not pursue careers, they depend on their husbands’ money. This is why most of their thoughts revolve around the husband. And because the husband only appears as “the” man, there is no man in this film. All women fight for the same man. Those who have one, want to keep him no matter what. And those who do not have one yet only have one goal: To take away somebody else’s husband.

Ohm Krüger (English: Uncle Krüger) is a 1941 German biographical film directed by Hans Steinhoff and starring Emil Jannings, Lucie Höflich and Werner Hinz.
