Década de 60, Guerra Fria. No Brasil, João Belchior Marques Goulart, mais conhecido como "Jango", um líder de esquerda e então presidente do país, se encontra em uma crise com ambos lados da política e sofre um golpe militar que resultaria em uma ditadura de três décadas. Importantes intelectuais e personalidades que participaram dessa fase concedem entrevistas para o documentário que retrata um dos mais marcantes momentos políticos do Brasil.

O documentário retrata a história de um grupo de chilenos que fotografou os protestos e a sociedade chilena em suas mais variadas facetas, durante o conturbado período de opressão da ditadura do General Augusto Pinochet. "Na rua, ao ritmo dos protestos, estes fotógrafos se formaram e criaram uma linguagem política. Para eles, fotografar foi uma prática de liberdade, uma tentativa de sobrevivência, uma alternativa para poder seguir vivendo."

Baseado numa história real. Em setembro de 1973, no Chile, o jornalista americano Charles Horman chega em Santiago com seu amigo Terry Simon para encontrar sua esposa Beth e trazê-la de volta para Nova York com ele. No entanto, eles são surpreendidos pelo golpe militar patrocinado pelo governo dos EUA para substituir o presidente Salvador Allende e Charles é preso pela força militar. Seu pai Ed Horman, um empresário conservador de Nova York, chega no Chile para buscar seu filho desaparecido com Beth. Ele vai ao Consulado Americano para com o cônsul que promete os maiores esforços para encontrar Charles enquanto a cética Beth não confia na palavra das autoridades americanas. O nacionalismo e a confiança de Ed em seu governo muda quando ele encontra a verdade sobre o que aconteceu com seu amado filho.

Filha de um herói da independência da Birmânia, Aung San Suu Kyi (Michelle Yeoh) foi morar no exterior ainda jovem. Na Inglaterra se casou com Michael Aris (David Thewlis) e teve dois filhos, Kim (Jonathan Raggett) e Alex (Jonathan Woodhouse), mantendo contato com o país através de livros publicados e o acompanhamento das notícias locais. Ao saber que sua mãe está internada em um hospital, Aung decide voltar à Birmânia para revê-la. Logo ao chegar ela é procurada por vários líderes locais, que desejam que ela coopere com o movimento pela implementação da democracia no país. Aung aceita o convite e, pouco a pouco, torna-se um ícone do movimento. A situação não agrada à ditadura militar local, que passa a acompanhar todos os seus passos e tenta impedi-la de promover manifestações. Até que, na esperança de fazer com que o povo se esqueça de Aung, o governo ordena que ela permaneça em prisão domiciliar por 15 anos.

Italy 1973. Giuseppe Tritoni (Ugo Tognazzi) is an ultra-right-wing congressman that doesn't agree anymore with his fascist party policy. He contacts many Italian Army officers and built a net of relationship in order to organize a Coup d'Etat (Golpe). Something goes wrong and the Interior Minister (Home Secretary) Mr. Li Masi (Lino Pugliesi) got the all information about the attempted Golpe. So the Minister organizes a counter-Golpe. Tritoni desperately, to save his project, kidnaps the Italian Republic President (Claude Dauphin) that immediately dies for heartache. Now Minister Mr. Li Masi is free to lay down the law to the rest of the country, realizing basically the actual Golpe! Tritoni surrenders and will spend rest of his time trying to sell his ideas about managing Golpe in Africa!

In Chile, during the 60´s, the son of a poor single teenage girl turns out to be a gifted painter. The man to discover his talent is the owner of the drugstore that lies in the outskirts of the small rural town, next to the railroad. He himself is an amateur painter who will try to make the boy into a great artist, like all the ones in his art books. From the pharmacists point of view in his old age, unfolds the story of this young boy who could have become a great art genius, had he not disappeared at the age of 13, along with all his works, on September 11th 1973, the day of the coupe d´état.
