Em Los Angeles e Chicago acontecem tramas paralelas que têm um denominador comum. Há a história de Paul (Sean Connery) e Hannah (Gena Rowlands), casal que está junto há quarenta anos, mas ainda lida com alguns fantasmas do passado. Tem o encontro de Mildred (Ellen Burstyn) com Mark (Jay Mohr), seu filho que está morrendo de AIDS. Gracie (Madeleine Stowe), que trai o marido com Roger (Anthony Edwards), também casado. Há Meredith (Gillian Anderson), diretora de teatro que teme se envolver com Trent (Jon Stewart). Existe ainda Joan (Angelina Jolie), uma extrovertida jovem que se apaixona perdidamente por Keenan (Ryan Phillippe), ainda traumatizado pela perda trágica de sua última namorada.

Théo foi dado para adoção pela sua mãe biológica no dia em que nasceu. O registo deu-o como filho de mãe incógnita, mas a mãe tem dois meses para mudar de ideias... ou não. Os serviços de ação social e os serviços de apoio à infância iniciam os devidos processos. Uns têm de se ocupar do bebé, de cuidar dele durante este tempo suspenso, esta fase de incerteza.
