Rick Heller é um delinqüente juvenil, que sempre arruma problemas. Margaret Heller, sua mãe, tentando evitar que Rick se meta novamente em encrencas, o põe para trabalhar limpando a jaula de Katie, uma gorila que está ensinando a se comunicar através da quirologia, que é a arte de conversar por meio de sinais feitos com os dedos. Até que Gus Charnley a leva para ser exibida no lugar de Bobo, um gorila que faleceu. Vendo que Katie está triste, Rick invade o lugar à noite e a liberta do cativeiro. Ele pede ajuda a Lacey Carr, uma jovem amiga que defende os direitos dos animais, com quem planeja levar Katie para o Canadá, pois assim ela ficaria livre. Lacey então sugere que Rick procure Max Carr, seu tio, em Washington, que irá ajudá-los. Porém fazer uma gorila atravessar a fronteira enquanto são procurados pela polícia não é nada fácil.

Young Tina lives with her mother and stepfather on a wildlife reserve in Kenya.
