Após 15 anos em uma pequena cidade de Ohio, Roxy Carmichael (Ava Fabian), uma celebridade, vai retornar à sua cidade natal. Tal acontecimento provoca uma certa excitação em grande parte dos habitantes, incluindo Denton Webb (Jeff Daniels), seu ex-marido. Mas é Dinky Bossetti (Winona Ryder), uma adolescente que foi adotada e que é ignorada pela maioria dos seus colegas, que é a mais afetada por tal fato, pois ela acredita ser a filha secreta de Roxy.
