Depois de mais uma tentativa de conquistar a vila gaulesa, alguns dos senadores romanos começam a suspeitar de que os moradores dali são, na verdade, uma espécie de deuses. César, para manter seu trono, envia à vila uma lista com doze tarefas que só poderiam ser realizadas por seres superiores. Se os gauleses vencerem o desafio, ele admitiria sua derrota. Caso contrário, se tornariam seus escravos. A proposta é aceita. Asterix, por ser o mais esperto, e Obelix, por ser o mais forte, são escolhidos para representar a vila. Com o peso de não falhar em uma só tarefa, os dois saem para cumprir os doze trabalhos e manter a dignidade gaulesa.

No Egito, Júlio César insulta Cleópatra ao dizer que sua nação está condenada a viver sob o regime de semiescravidão dos romanos. Decidida a provar que seu povo não está decadente, Cleópatra diz que construirá um magnífico palácio em Alexandria, em apenas 3 meses. Sem saber o que fazer, o engenheiro da obra decide contactar o druida Panoramix, para que ele possa ajudá-lo disponibilizando um pouco da poção mágica que dá força sobrehumana a quem a bebe.

Os bravos guerreiros gauleses Asterix e Obelix recebem uma importante tarefa: transformar o jovem Calhambix, sobrinho do chefe Abracurcix, em um verdadeiro guerreiro. Mas, isto não será nada simples, pois além de medroso, ele só se interessa pelas modernidades urbanas. Para piorar, uma tropa Viking invade a Gália e seqüestra Calhambix. Atravessando as águas geladas do Ártico, Asterix, Obelix e o fiel cãozinho Idéiafix, enfrentarão inúmeros obstáculos para trazê-lo de volta. Mas, nem tudo é guerra entre gauleses e vikings. Entre uma aventura e outra há também espaço para um romance inesperado.

A única coisa que realmente põe medo nos gauleses é a possibilidade do céu cair sobre suas cabeças... E parece que isso vai acontecer... Uma terrível tempestade assola a vila e, para piorar, o druida Panoramix é atingido acidentalmente por Obelix com uma pedra gigante, e fica inconsciente. Ao acordar, não se lembra de praticamente nada, em especial da fórmula de sua poção mágica. Agora, Asterix e Obelix terão de defender a vila por conta própria.

Durante uma batalha na vila gaulesa, a poção que dá força sobre humana a Asterix e Obelix se acaba. Antes que Panoramix possa preparar outra, é capturado e os dois amigos são enviados para salvá-lo. Eles terminam na América, onde os índios, que já haviam feito Panoramix prisioneiro, capturam Asterix. O pajé da tribo quer, de qualquer maneira, a fórmula da poção mágica e o druida se utiliza de todos os artifícios para proteger seu segredo. Quando os três gauleses finalmente conseguem escapar dos índios e retornar para casa, começa uma outra missão: libertar o povo gaulês do imperador Júlio César.

Mas, Panoramix, o druida da vila prepara uma poção especial para ele. Nosso herói Asterix dá a ele a mistura: um tônico poderoso que faz seu cabelo crescer, crescer...

As tropas romanas invadem a Bretanha em mais uma etapa na sua fase de conquistas por toda a Europa antiga. Os bretões se pareciam com os gauleses e muitos deles descendiam de tribos vindas da Gália. Entre eles estava um contra-parente de Asterix que, ao perceber que os bretões não resistiriam por muito tempo ao ataque romano, resolve partir em busca de Asterix para conseguir um pouco da poção mágica que lhes dá uma força descomunal. Asterix e seus amigos concordam, afinal os bretões sempre ajudaram os gauleses nas batalhas contra o exército romano. Eles enchem um barril com poção suficiente para toda a tribo bretã e partem rumo à grande ilha. No caminho deparam-se com uma galera romana que, embora tenha sido derrotada, volta para avisar que os bretões estão recebendo a poção. Daí para frente têm início as mais divertidas aventuras de Asterix e Obelix para evitar que os romanos se apoderem da poção.
