Corre el año 50 A.C. En la Galia, ocupada por los romanos, un pequeño poblado galo resiste de forma victoriosa a los insistentes ataques de los invasores. César sabe que hay que hacer algo para evitar verse humillado y ridiculizado. Por ello obliga a los habitantes del poblado a que elijan dos representantes que deberán superar doce pruebas que sólo los dioses podrían resistir. Lo que no sabe César es que los dos galos elegidos: Astérix, el guerrero, y Obélix, el portador de menhires, cuentan con la ayuda de la poción mágica cuya fórmula secreta solamente conoce el druida Panorámix.

Cleopatra quiere demostrar a Julio César que los egipcios son capaces de construir mejor que los romanos y, para ello, encarga a Numerobis, el arquitecto, que proyecte un palacio y lo construya en el plazo de tres meses. Numerobis se siente incapaz de hacerlo, por lo que pide ayuda a su amigo el druida Panorámix. Este parte hacia Alejandría en busca de su amigo, y lo hace acompañado por Astérix y Obélix. Juntos sortearán un sinfín de peligros, visitarán la Esfinge y las Pirámides, navegarán por el Nilo, incluso pasarán un rato en la cárcel...

La pequeña aldea gala va a recibir a Gudúrix, el sobrino del jefe, que ha encomendado a Astérix y Obélix la misión de convertirlo en un hombre hecho y derecho. Pero, a pesar de sus aires de superioridad, este adolescente de Lutecia no es más que un cobarde redomado, y el entrenamiento de choque al que lo someterán no parece que vaya a cambiar mucho las cosas. Mientras, los vikingos desembarcan en la Galia dispuestos a encontrar a un «campeón del miedo» que, tal y como les ha prometido su mago, sea capaz de enseñarles a volar, ya que, según él, «el miedo da alas». Cuando los vikingos raptan a Gudúrix se desata la catástrofe. Astérix y Obélix deberán hacer lo imposible por encontrarlo. Mientras se lanzan hacia el Gran Norte en busca de su joven protegido, éste, que se ha visto implicado contra su voluntad en un infame complot, conoce a la bella e intrépida Abba y se da cuenta de que el amor puede tener el mismo efecto que un puñetazo. ¡Todo un choque de culturas!

El druida Panoramix sufre el golpe de un menhir, quedando amnésico, lo cual supone una desgracia para su pueblo, ya que sólo él conoce la fórmula de la poción mágica con la que se defienden de la invasión romana. Astérix y Obélix intentarán por todos los medios arreglar el problema.

En la pequeña aldea gala, unos niños han empezado una discusión infantil. En el transcurso de la reyerta, el caldero en el que Panoramix está preparando la poción mágica cae al suelo, derramando el preciado contenido. El druida sale entonces al bosque a buscar los ingredientes para preparar una nueva marmita, pero es secuestrado por sus temibles enemigos: "los romanos". Astérix y Obélix, con la ayuda de Idéfix, descubren el hecho y persiguen a los romanos para liberar a su amigo. Los romanos tienen intención llegar hasta los confines del mar y arrojar a Panorámix al precipicio del mundo (pues suponen que es plano), pero se encontrarán con América. Y los dos pequeños galos van tras ellos...

En el año 50 antes de Cristo toda la Galia ha sido ocupada por los romanos... ¿Toda? no; una pequeña aldea de irreductibles galos resiste incansable al invasor. En el campamento romano próximo de Petibonum, Caius Bonus está muy enfadado porque sus patrullas, cada vez que se encuentran con alguno de los habitantes del pequeño pueblo galo, son derrotadas y dispersadas. Ello es debido a que los galos toman una poción mágica que les hace invencibles, cuya fórmula secreta sólo es conocida por el druida Panoramix. Los romanos secuestran al druida, pero no consiguen que les revele la fórmula secreta. Entretanto, Astérix, que ha echado de menos a Panorámix, se introduce en el campamento romano para liberarle...

Es ocioso pensar que los británicos se han hecho raros a través de los siglos. Ya eran realmente diferentes desde sus mismos orígenes.
