O patriarca Helge traz toda a família para o seu hotel, para comemorar seu aniversário de sessenta anos. A festa era apenas uma típica comemoração burguesa até o filho mais velho do aniversariante fazer o seu discurso de homenagem ao pai e revelar uma história doméstica que ninguém poderia esperar.

Um grupo de pessoas finge sempre ter problemas mentais, argumentando ser contra a hipocrisia da classe média. Nos momentos em que estão em contato com outras pessoas e até mesmo aqueles em que estão sozinhos, deixam o seu "idiota interior" aflorar. Em um restaurante o grupo encontra Karen, uma mulher que parece não ter preconceitos contra a quebra dos rituais burgueses feita por eles e a levam para a casa onde moram todos juntos.

The film is made in the Dogme95 tradition, so no costumes, no lighting, no props or sets, which gives the film a gritty texture appropriate to the story.
