A man Elliot "Lightning" Scott wakes up in a hospital bed from a coma, not able to remember anything about his life except that two men killed his cat and put him in a hospital. A woman Linda Lum in traditional Chinese clothing helps him escape the hospital and takes him into the deep woods and trains him in karate. He will now begin a journey of self discovery.

The story centers on an introverted high school student named Eiji Hoshimiya with a huge secret—he wished for the destruction of the world when he was younger. Ten years after the Great Destruction, Eiji struggles to come to terms with his immense power.

After seeing her husband off to work, the young author identified only as Yoshiko sets off to read the large collection of letters she received from other young authors.
