Depois que sua mãe e o padastro são presos, a adolescente Vanessa Lutz (Reese Witherspoon) decide que, ao invés de ser mandada de novo para um orfanato, prefere procurar a avó que nunca conheceu. No caminho, seu carro quebra e ela pega carona com Bob (Kiefer Sutherland), conselheiro em uma escola para meninos com problemas de comportamento.
