Kang, Fung e Xiao Hu, três jovens ingênuos, chegam na Xangai do anos 30 em busca de uma vida melhor. A capital era na época uma cidade moderna, repleta de glamour e violência. Kang é ambicioso e está disposto a tudo para atingir seus objetivos. Seu irmão Xiao Hu, o admira cegamente. Fung, por sua vez, foi parar na cidade a contragosto e terá que lutar para encontrar seu caminho num ambiente agressivo.
