Um escritor, Nicholas Gardenia (Chevy Chase), é seqüestrado por dois bandidos, que o forçam a roubar US$ 7 mil de um banco em Carmel. Somente o rosto dele é pego pelas câmeras de segurança, o que faz com que ele seja forçado a recorrer a sua ex-esposa, Glenda Parks (Goldie Hawn), uma advogada que sempre ajuda oprimidos. Ela concorda em esconder Nick, mas o maior problema é mantê-lo longe da vista do atual marido, Ira J. Parks (Charles Grodin). Ira é o promotor público de Los Angeles e será indicado para ser promotor público estadual, sendo que seria bom para a carreira dele prender Nick.

Sharon appears to be a normal 17-year-old girl with good grades, many friends, and a wonderful personality - hardly someone you think would be considering suicide. But her home life is constrained by the pressures and expectations of her parents. She slowly spirals downward, her mother at one point telling her that she has no business being unhappy. So, she gulps down a bottle of sleeping pills. She is saved, but for how long?

A small forest town is trying to promote itself as a place for tourists to come enjoy the therapeutic hot springs and unspoiled nature. Dr. Stockmann, however, makes the inconvenient discovery that the nature around the village is not so unspoiled. In fact, the runoff from the local tanning mill has contaminated the water to a dangerous degree. The town fathers argue that cleaning up the mess would be far too expensive and the publicity would destroy the town's reputation, so therefore news of the pollution should be suppressed. Dr. Stockmann decides to fight to get the word out to the people, but receives as very mixed reaction.

Although each always found the other's manner grating, they fall in love when thrown together--without their spouses--on vacation. On returning home they try to break things off, only to grow closer. A holiday together will finally settle whether they should end their marriages.
