The spy Im Su-myung refuses to speak. Kang Sin-jung is the lawyer appointed for Su-myung's defense. Sin-jung's interest is peaked. Su-myung was the youngest son of a ruined landowner. When two of his brothers defect to North Korea, the police torment the remaining family. In order to find out the truth about communism, Su-myung goes to the North too, leaving behind his other brother to watch over their mother. In North Korea, the three brothers are persecuted for being members of the Communist Party in South Korea.

Hye-rim is a model prisoner serving out her sentence for murder. With two years left to go, she gets a special outing. Hye-rim gets on a train to Kang-reung to visit her mother's grave. When she is subjected to another body search, she protests against the humiliation and jumps from the roof of her company building. She is critically injured and is embraced by Kwang-seok.

Jung Kyung-hwa started teaching at the age of 18 and she begins a new career as a journalist in Youngnam Daily. When her first article appeared on the newspaper, she felt happy. At the end of the Japanese rule, Jeom-Rye, a daughter of a poor farmer, bares a son of a Japanese policeman Yamada, but she gets married to Park Hang-Koo and lives a happy life with their daughter, Se-Yeon, after Yamada and his son run away after Liberation of Korea. During the Korean War, Hang dies and then, she happens to meet Flanders, a lieutenant of the U.S. Army. She bears a mixed-blood son but lets him go with Flanders returning to U.S. Yamada's son and Flanders II, who became American soldiers, come to Jeom-Rye, who is working on a farm with Se-Yeon who grows up now. Accepting the past and present situations, Jeom-Rye behaves wisely. While Se-Yeon is meeting Flanders II, she cries with rage for the Communist Party.

With the result of the brain operation, Kyu-Ae has the lower half of her body paralyzed and lives on a wheelchair with her husband Hyeong-Jin, a professor, and her cousin Kyu-Hee who takes care of housework. As Mi-Ran, who loved Hyeong-Jin before and now is divorced her husband, returns from America, the love between Hyeong-Jin and Kyu-Ae breaks. When Kyu-Ae knows Kyu-Hee loves Hyeong-Jin, she becomes almost mad. Kyu-Hee decides to marry a factory worker Young-Kil to keep Kyu-Ae and Hyeong-Jin's relationship good. But Kyu-Ae asks him a divorce, asking him to marry Kyu-Hee. After he decides to divorce, Kyu-Ae kills herself. As the result, Kyu-Hee leaves him.
