After four years, Jake Cardigan is prematurely awoken from his fifteen year cryogenic punishment to a world very different than the one he knew. Much more than before 'Tek', the highly-addictive electronic designer narcotic of the 21st century, seems to be prevalent. His wife has divorced him and disappeared together with their son. He wants them back and he wants justice for those undercover policemen who were murdered by unknown conspirators which led to his imprisonment for a crime he did not commit.
A história começa em 1959, quando um menino tem sua vida salva por uma sereia adolescente. Após vinte e cinco anos, ela (Daryl Hannah), que se transformou em uma bela mulher loira, resolve pisar em terra seca por meio de Allen Bauer (Tom Hanks), o garoto que salvou. A sereia, que agora anda sobre duas pernas, adota o nome de Madison a partir de uma placa de rua que viu na cidade de Nova York. Quando Allen e Madison se encontram, se apaixonam, mas um laboratório secreto do governo, comandado por Walter Kornbluth (Eugene Levy) rapta a jovem para fins de pesquisa. A partir daí, Allen pede ajuda a seu irmão Freddie Bauer (John Candy) para recuperar sua amada.
