In the 60s, in the heart of a village, Robert lives with his mother Odette. About fifty, balding, paunchy, Robert spends most of his time locked in the garage where he tries to develop a teleport machine. Robert will try to teleport himself, but a fly is stuck in the machine, and the scientific apprentice will gradually turn into a giant insect. Robert will little by little dehumanize to become a beast able to climb the wall, pushed by an insatiable search for food.

Seth Brundie (Jeff Goldblum) é um cientista excêntrico que trabalha numa nova invenção, uma máquina de teletransporte - a TelePod. Thea, a researcher from an institute for nuclear studies, leaves for a vacation but ends up on an adventure at the boundary between fantasy and reality. On the TV screen the image of a man appears who disappeared 20 years ago after a nuclear explosion. She falls in love with this picture and convinces a colleague and close friend that they can bring back the man who disappeared through a strange reverse process. Her only way to communicate with this picture however is via the TV screen, and her love can only be communicated through dreaming.

Clássico da ficção científica baseado num conto de George Langelaan publicado pela primeira vez em 1957 numa edição da revista Playboy. Dirigido por Kurt Neumann, o filme se tornou uma das maiores bilheterias do estúdio Fox naquele ano e o maior sucesso comercial na carreira do diretor - que nunca soube disso, uma vez que ele morreu apenas um mês antes da estréia. Houve ainda duas sequências: "O Retorno da Mosca" (1959) e "A Maldição da Mosca" (1965). Em 1986 o filme original foi refilmado por David Cronenberg.
