Situado na Zagreb pré-Segunda Guerra Mundial, a história é vista através dos olhos de Perica Šafranek de 6 anos de idade (interpretado por Tomislav Žganec). Um dândi de Zagreb, Fulir (interpretado por Relja Bašić), começa a flertar com a mãe de Perica durante um piquenique familiar. No início, o pai de Perica não percebe nada, mas quer se casar com a tia de Perica, então ele convida o homem para sua residência. Depois de vários encontros, o pai de Perica toma consciência das tentativas de Fulir de seduzir sua esposa.

The feeling of being incapable of controlling your own life and general uselessness make people want to escape the world around them. In spite of the feeling that they possess some creative force, they still feel they waste their time and lives.

One of the first movies who spoke of Yugoslav socio-political system with some criticism, set in a company. On the routine workers' council meeting a few brave workers stand against a corrupted manager.

Composer and pianist Blaz Gaber lives only for his music and does not want to know anything about the outside world, where the war is raging. Upon his arrival from his poorly attended concert, he finds himself in prison for having stars drawn in his notebook by a little boy. A young illegal activist seeks refugee in the school, where the pupils hide his pistol inside the Gaber's piano. A German officer comes with his soldiers to find the hidden illegal, orders the school to be evacuated and takes the piano together with him on a train.

When the planes bombed a Slovene town, a Slovene boy and a German girl set on a journey towards the valley, in which there is no war. On their way a black American pilot, who jumped of a shoot-down plane, joins them. Although American planes have killed the boy's parents, he accepts the pilot with enthusiasm. The children communicate with him in German and the valley of peace seems like the last paradise place of refuge. The Slovene boy, the German girl, and the American pilot represent a symbolic triangle of peace in this adventure happening in the middle of the War of Liberation.
