Joe, um jovem soldado americano, é atingido por um morteiro no último dia da Primeira Guerra Mundial. Ele repousa em uma cama de hospital em uma situação angustiante. Continua consciente, mas sem conseguir saber se está dormindo ou acordado. Apesar de tudo, não consegue parar de sonhar, rever suas memórias e refletir sobre o que irá acontecer consigo.
